YesAsia Editorial Description

Longtime actor Lo Lieh steps into the director's chair for Clan of the White Lotus, an enjoyable semi-sequel/remake of Executioners from Shaolin that's a charming kung fu extravaganza in its own right! Gordon Liu Chia-Hui (Kill Bill, 36th Chamber of the Shaolin) stars as Hung Wei-Ting, a young Shaolin disciple seeking to avenge the death of his blood brother and his fiancée, who both died at the hands of the evil White Lotus (Lo Lieh), chief of the White Lotus Clan. With the help of his best friend's pregnant wife, Mei-Hsiao (Kara Hui Ying-Hung), Wei-Ting goes into hiding and tries to combine Tiger and Crane boxing (and later a more feminine style) to defeat the evil White Lotus. After two unsuccessful attempts, Wei-Ting nearly loses his life to White Lotus's 100-Pace Punch, a fatal maneuver which kills its victim after one hundred steps. Once he recovers, Wei-Ting learns the secrets of acupressure, integrating this new technique into his own mishmash of disparate fighting styles to a new school of martial arts - embroidery kung fu! Confident in his abilities, Wei-Ting challenges White Lotus to a fight to the death, but will he be able to survive?

Boasting strong performances from Gordon Liu and Kara Hui, Clan of the White Lotus makes for winning martial arts entertainment. And as good as Gordon Liu is, the hero is only as good as his villain, and Lo Lieh delivers in his role as the nefarious White Lotus Chief. With crackerjack action sequences, hilarious comedy, and compelling characters, Clan of the White Lotus is a stellar revenge flick that's so good it surpasses its predecessor!

Director: Lo Lieh

Lo Lieh was famous as Shaw Studio's First international kung-fu film star, but it was rare that he also directed, so this was one of those special events. Following the huge success of Executioners From Shaolin, Lo returned to the villain's role in this, a combination sequel and remake. The result is a light-hearted entertainment, as heroic Gordon Liu Chia-hui must learn "Embroidery Fist" and acupuncture to counter the evil White Lotus leader's deadly "Weightless Boxing" and "Nerve Centre Shutdown" techniques.

Professional Review of "Clan Of The White Lotus"

January 22, 2007

This professional review refers to Clan Of The White Lotus (Hong Kong Version)
Clan of the White Lotus serves as a loose sequel to 1977's Executioners from Shaolin, but the film shares just enough plot elements and characters with its predecessor to be considered somewhat of a remake as well. The film begins with two Shaolin warriors fighting against the vicious "White Eyebrow Priest" Pai Mei. By combining their respective tiger and crane styles, the two heroes defeat the famous villain in an acrobatic display of martial arts prowess. The movie then flashes forward to a time when the Emperor lifts the ban on the Shaolin temple, allowing all Shaolin brothers to be released from prison. Hu Ah Piao, one of the heroes who beat Pai Mei, is scheduled for release, much to the delight of his pregnant wife Mei Hsiao (Kara Hui Ying Hung), his best friend Hung Wei Ting (Gordon Liu Chia Hui), and his lovely sister Ching Ching (Yeung Jing Jing). Of course, those loyal to Pai Mei are angered by the emperor's show of mercy, but none are more outraged than the evil White Lotus (Lo Lieh), chieftain of the White Lotus Clan and the identical twin CLASSMATE of Pai Mei. Thirsting for bloody retribution, White Lotus leads an all-out attack on our heroes, which leaves both Ah Piao and Ching Ching dead. Barely making it out with their lives, Mei Hsiao and Wei Ting escape to another village where they gain employment at a paper dummy shop.

Seeking to avenge the death of both his sworn brother and his fiancée, Wei Ting tries to combine Tiger and Crane boxing into one style, practicing every evening. But when he loses his bout with White Lotus on the first try, Wei Ting trains for a few more years, but sadly ends up failing yet again. After learning that his technique is too forceful to strike the ethereal White Lotus, Wei Ting looks to Mei Hsiao to teach him a softer, more feminine style of kung fu. She agrees, making him do "women's work" as training—caring for the baby, sewing, etc. Eventually Wei Ting learns the slinky, graceful techniques of his sworn sister and sets off to face White Lotus – and loses!

This time around, however, Wei Ting almost loses his life in the process, nearly succumbing to White Lotus's 100-Pace Punch, a deadly maneuver which kills the victim one hundred steps after the blow is delivered. Thanks to some acupuncture from an unlikely ally, Wei-Ting is back in action. Eagerly, he learns the secrets of acupressure points and incorporates this new knowledge into his own eclectic mix of Tiger, Crane, and Women's kung fu to create a whole new style of fighting: embroidery kung fu! With acupuncture needles in hand, Wei Ting heads off for the final showdown with White Lotus. But will he win?

Although repetitive, Clan of the White Lotus is a fun movie. It boasts some strong performances, which elevate the film beyond its ho-hum revenge plot. Gordon Liu's screen presence is so incredibly strong, and he's so darn likable that one tends to forgive the plot's repetitiveness. Kara Hui Ying Hung really shines in the role of Mei Hsiao, imbuing it with more humanity and depth than was probably on the written page. It also doesn't hurt that Hui is an elegant, dexterous performer, who demonstrates her "feminine kung fu" with an obvious grace and confidence, which Gordon Liu plays off perfectly.

A hero is only as good as the villain who opposes him, and White Lotus is a very effective villain. Besides serving as the film's antagonist, Lo Lieh was also the film's director. Clan of the White Lotus was only Lo's second time in the director's chair, and for what it's worth, the film looks like it was handled by a pro: the martial arts sequences are a bit snappier, the comedy a whole lot funnier, and the performances a lot more compelling than the previous film. But even on its own, Clan of the White Lotus is a satisfying revenge flick with just enough nuances to keep people tuned in to the proceedings.

Great cast in solid film Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Clan of the White Lotus" is another variation on the common theme of Shaolin good guys against Qing Dynasty bad guys. Here Gordon Liu plays the champion of the Shaolin Han crowd and Lo Lieh of the White Lotus Clan does the dirty work for the evil Qing rulers. Lo Lieh plays his white-haired martial arts maestro to the hilt. Gordon Liu has a tendency to overact, but his fighting skills are sheer poetry. And Kara Hui steals the show in the film's best scene, a sequence in which she schools Gordon Liu in a woman's kung fu. This entertaining actioner is very highly recommended.

Clan of the White Lotus Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Blast off!! Another one of Gordon's best as he showed his comedic ability while learning the 'woman's touch kungfu' from Kara Hui. Lo Lieh immortalised himself as the invincible head of White Lotus clan in this movie. It's a sort of sequel to Executioners of Shaolin whereby Hung Hei Kun's son, Hung Mun Teng, seeked revenge for his father by killing Pai Mei Master with his combination of Tiger and Crane techniques. I love the bit where Lo Lieh was 'needled' by Gordon. Anyone who is not familiar with acupuncture should realise that the acupuncture 'points' mentioned in the manual are facts. Only felt that it's quite tasteless to show Lo Lieh's backside during the attack in the 'spa'. If need be, I'd rather have Gordon's (haha!!).

Having said that Shaw Brothers (or is it Celestial) did a good job as all the related movies are clear. Only big complaint and disappointment is that all these dvds did not attempt to slot into the Special Features interviews with stars like Lo Lieh, Liu Chia Liang or Gordon Liu about their views on all these epic classics. Most of the Special Features are printed info repeated in all the dvds. Exceptions are Challenge of the Masters (short segment introducing the Hung Fist technique, Gordon included but not totally demonstrating the technique - pity as he should be demonstrating them as he's synonamous with all the movements instead of an overweight sifu and students), 36 Chamber and this movie whereby Gordon was interviewed in 2003 still showing a trained, trim and hot bod at 48.

Gordan's Best Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
As a kung-fu film lover, this truly holds a special place in my heart as possibly Gordan Liu's best. Plus, this is the role I immortalize Lo Lieh in. The whole weightless technique & Woman Kung-fu is a blast! Kara Hui is stellar as well. A must see, must have for Gordan, Lo Lieh, Kara Hui, kung-fu fans. As an aside, this ending is quite possibly the most honest exclaimation a character can express after killing the head priest of the White Lotus clan rather than the typical walking silently off into a sunset.

Yeung Jing Jing! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This movie has a lot of special qualities. The directing is top notch, and the story really flows well. The highlight for me are the fighting sequences including Yeung Jing Jing and Kara Hui.Yeung wasnt in enough Shaw movies for me,but when you see her early in the film in a solo training sequence, she will blow you away. The movie"The Treasure Hunters" is the best representation of how incredible Yeung Jing Jing is.She was also a fight choreographer for a period of time as well.In my opinion the only woman at Shaw that is more skilled than the infamous Kara Hui.

Unbeatable morale Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Despite the simple story plot, the morale of the storyline is very valuable in applying today's world. No matter how many times of failure Gordon Liu fighted the villain White Lotus, he keeps on attempting and reviewing his style of kungfu till the finale he managed to win the battle. Good martial arts and interesting scenes throughout the movie. No boring scenes. Worth spending time off.
