YesAsia Editorial Description

A seamless blend of real live actors and computer generated special effects are on display in Akiyama Takahiro's Hinokio, a story about one lonely boy and his desire to reach out and connect with humanity, albeit with a futuristic twist!

Fearful and unable to leave his house since his mother's untimely death, a heartbroken, emotionally devastated twelve year old named Satoru (Kanata Hongo) withdraws himself from all contact with the outside world. However, this situation changes slightly when a technological marvel is built for him, a state-of-the-art robot nicknamed Hinokio! With the help of his robot doppelganger, Satoru is able to take the first tentative steps to reconnecting with the world around him, sending Hinokio to grade school in his stead.

During this daring experiment, Satoru is able to befriend a tomboy named Jun (Tabe Mikano) with the help of his robotic stand-in. But even if he connects with Jun, is he still not alone, isolated in his bedroom? Soon enough, this relationship impels Satoru to attempt to experience the world in a more direct manner, but not by coming out of the house. Instead, he activates the robot's "sensations," a decision that puts young Takashi in mortal jeopardy.

Back home, there is also the strained relationship between father and son for Takashi to deal with. Satoru's dad Kaoru (Masatoshi Nakamura) tries his best to reach out to his son, but Satoru still blames him for his mother's death. Thus, communication between the two is sparse at best. Yet through the vehicle of Hinokio, the two may finally have a chance at reconciliation. Will Satoru trade all his newfound virtual relationships for real ones or will he remain petrified with fear? Featuring appearances by Kobayashi Ryoko and Horikita Maki, Hinokio is a poignant film that asks the hard questions about what it really means to be alive.

The disc includes a making-of featurette, trailers, TV spots, and for the first pressing only, a Hinokio keyholder.

Professional Review of "HINOKIO INTER GALACTIC LOVE (Japan Version - English Subtitles )"

October 12, 2005

Hinokio is a heart-warming children's film that looks at young people affected by death, school, friendship, and communication. Satoru, emotionally handicapped by his mother's death and the temporary disability of his legs, has a fear of emotional communication with his father and those around him. In order to regain a sense of social interaction, Satoru uses a bizarre-looking robot nicknamed Hinokio to carry out his everyday duties (namely attending school). In this film, Satoru's use of the Hinokio robot provides a stage for the reflection of his inner emotions and his eventual reintegration into family and society.

Most films directed towards children usually contain a positive message for social behavior, morality, and traditional values. Hinokio is no different: the positive messages are indeed there, albeit somewhat confused. This is because the range of societal problems and subplots that the film tries to incorporate is much larger than a 110-minute film can accommodate. For example, the problems between Satoru and his father would be more than enough to take the audience on a more focused and emotionally wrenching journey.

Adding to the confusion, some of the metaphors used in the film are also too complicated for the comprehension of younger viewers. In particular, the links between the real world, the virtual world, and the spiritual world, most of which are loosely explained by a video game featured in the film. This may sound confusing, and indeed it is, as the film oscillates between the real world and the game world. Finally, these two worlds merge, creating an even more confusing gateway into the spiritual world.

One of the less talked about achievements of the film is the visual effects. The effects used to create the Hinokio robot are an achievement in themselves. This isn't surprising since director Takahiko Akiyama was the special effects supervisor for Final Fantasy – The Spirit Within. The way the robot looks and moves imbues a sense of humor and vulnerability which accurately reflect Satoru's character. Ultimately, the synergy between Satoru and the robot becomes so comprehensive that at times you forget that Satoru is really a human and not a robot.

Overall, Hinokio isn't good enough to warrant a cinema outing, but, despite its minor flaws, it's an enjoyable film that is positively geared towards youths and family audiences.

A heartwarming movie. Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Have you ever wonder if there`s a real-life pinochio? Is there a way to bring this favored child`s tale to life without beating to death with cliches?

Hinokio is stunning when it comes to special effects, CGI and booasts great acting from the child actors/actresses. Storywise, I can only describe it as slightly predictable. At times, I can see each frame of the movie as each plate of a well-plotted manga.
But I enjoy it nonetheless.

So much that I owed the DVD!
