This Movie remind me of the Communist Harsh Days Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I watched almost all of Gong Li Movies because I am a big fan of Gong Li. I consider this is the best of all the movies she've made. secondly is "Raised the Red Lantern" 5 Star

oNe WoRd SaYs It AlL...sAd Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I watched this movie in class and found it very meaningful in some parts of the film. However, the part that moves me the most am Youshing protects his sister, Fengxia from the bullies. I wanted to cry because siblings these days do not care so deeply about each other anymore; they are more distant. Gong Li is a good actress and I enjoy watching her. Although I was disgusted at the part when Fengxia bled, I felt so sorry for Fugui and his family. It is almost like fate that caused all this. Overall, I really like this film and I would recommend it to all of my friends. Thank you.

No comparison Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Some people like to compare this to Zhang Yimou's other films, yet I think this far surpasses anything else he has done. This film is engaging, involving, emotional, and driven by strong characters, an amazing historical narrative, and better timed storytelling than an other Zhang movie. It features great performances from both Gong Li and Ge You (who in my opinion - Ge You - is one of the best actors in all of China today.) What's most appealing though, is that this is a story of survival, one that can appeal to virtually anyone. It is the definitive Zhang Yimou masterpiece, better than any of his other works - a better human movie than any by any 5th generation director.

Great Movie that is worth watching again and again Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This film is on the same par as "Farwell to My Concubine". If you happen to hate the sex abuse part depicted in the "Farewell" movie, this may be your best Chinese movie ever made. Director Zhang effectively mixed historical events into this movie and made the audience really involved with what happened to the characters portrayed in this movie. There are so many great scenes in this movie and they can be both funny and sad at the same time. This movie is worthing watching over and over again.

Another Master Piece by Director Zhang Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This movie is about a reformed gamber and his wife. The director did a great job in intertwining historical events with this couple's family life. Great acting especially the gambler's character. But I really get involved with all the characters in this movie and become really cared for each of them. This movie is worth watching over and over again.
