Aspiring singer Hee Soo (Kim Ok Bin) runs away from home, traveling from Australia to Korea to pursue her musical dreams. Rough-and-tumble Hyuk Joo (Ji Hyun Woo) is determined to prove himself as a dancer, but the music industry is full of obstacles for a newcomer. Arrogant pop idol Rex (Fany) has countless fans and hit records, but no say over his own music. Spunky market vendor Sang Mi (Seo Ji Hye) wants to change her life for the better, but can't find her place in the entertainment business. When these four young people meet, new sparks dance into their lives. Amidst the unseen hardships, backstage drama, and conflicts of heart, they must find their own path to their dreams and earn their places on stage.

<오버 더 레인보우>(문화방송 수·목 드라마, 밤 9시50분)는 가요계의 인물 군상을 대변할 수 있는 네 명의 인물을 중심으로 펼쳐진다. 이미 오버의 무지개 끝 구름에서 낚시질을 즐기는 ‘스타 렉스’(환희)가 있고, 렉스를 바라보며 컨디션을 가늠하고 보약 지어줄 태세를 갖춘 ‘빠순이’ 마상미(서지혜)가 있다. 그리고 아버지의 비극을 뒤로하고 스타를 향한 꿈을 키우는 ‘외국삘’ 정희수(김옥빈)가 있고, 감정적인 이유로 춤을 배우고 감정적인 이유로 그만두기도 하는 깡패 출신 권혁주(지현우)와 그의 팀 갱스터가 있다.

설정은 ‘지대로’ 전형적이지만 풀어나가는 방식은 드라마적 관습에서 멀찌감치 나갔다. 2부에서 이미 2년 세월이 흐르도록 하고, 주인공 상미는 3부가 되어서야 등장한다. 희수는 드라마에서는 보기 드문 악역 주연이다. 초반 자존심을 걸고 스타 시스템에 반항하는 듯 보이지만 딱 ‘스타 시스템’에 필요할 만큼만 반항적이었음이 드러나는데, 심지어 일부러 그랬다는 뉘앙스도 풍긴다. 데뷔가 결정되는 것 또한 다른 매니지먼트사에서 온 제안을 거절해서였다(그 데뷔는 단지 옷걸이가 좋아서 이루어진 ‘섹시 콘셉트’ 립싱크 가수였다). 데뷔를 결정하자마자 남자친구를 모른 체하고, 렉스가 진정으로 자신을 사랑하지 않는 것으로 보이자 마음을 움직이기 위해 연기도 한다.

편집과 촬영 역시 막대본이 아님을 여실히 드러냈다. 뉴질랜드에서 펼쳐지는 ‘광대한’ 스토리라인과 한국의 지질한 인간 군상은 뉴질랜드 편의 희수가 “가이드 해줄까”라는 대사 다음에 서울의 ‘관광나이트’를 배치하는 식으로 짜맞췄고, 교통사고 뒤 렉스의 프라이드 엔터테인먼트 사무실로 온 선영(박희진)과 상미가 한창 이야기하는 전경에 커튼을 닫는 컷이 이어지며 렉스 사무실로 이동한다. 뒤쪽에서 혁주 어머니가 희수를 불렀는데 앞쪽에서 혁주 아버지(임하룡)가 혁주에게 속삭이는 내용이 오버되다가 다음 장면에서 희수는 “네 알겠어요” 하며 일어서는 장면도 재미있다.
