You Don't Know

YesAsia Editorial Description

Singer/song-writer Melody Yang, more commonly known as Mel, is the only female member of the well-known Taiwanese group Machi. Gaining profound singing experience while performing with her fellow Machi group-mates, she finally releases her first solo album You Don't Know which includes 10 brand new songs of different styles. "The Taste of Love" (Track 9), composed by Mel herself for a TV commercial, has become a big hit in 2007. In making the song "Born as a Couple" (Track 2) for a jeans TV commercial, Mel has her friend Vanness Wu of F4 to rap for her, enriching the song's texture. Instead of offering R&B, hip-hop, and rock music which Machi excels in, Mel mixes these elements into expressive songs to create a musical style of her own. Experience the touching music by Mel now!

So Gooood Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Clearly a trained singer, her talent shines through in her first release. You can see Mel playing with her options by opting to write various genres of songs and it works. The album is not boring and engages the listener to anticipate the next song. Mel's voice is bright and crisp, and the simple arrangement throughout her album does well to not clutter her vocal space. As a new artist, her new album is not extraordinary in showing off her true potential and talent and plays it safe with catchy and easy-to-listen songs; which is a good thing, because we don't need more noisy Beyonce-esque music blasting through our speakers.

A great foot in the door of the music industry, I anticipate her next release and hope to see her fine tune her style. Hopefully from this album, she can see what works for her and what doesn't-- her Love's Flavor track echoes the spirit of Kimlan perfectly, and the sexy Perfect Match song featuring Vanness Wu brings back the sexy flavor of the Mel everyone knew from Machi. The brightest star in her album, however is her title track, You Don't Know, which is unpredictable, catchy, and extremely touching.

Asians from Asia and the West will find that this album is definitely worth listening to. I highly recommend it.

Okay Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I was somewhat disappointed in this album. The beats are so-so and the songs weren't very catchy. I expected more from this album since she has a really powerful voice but they don't show in this album, since the songs are more pop and less focused on vocals. None of the songs really stood out to me.
