YesAsia Editorial Description
Chow stars as Sing, a wannabe gangster in pre-war 1940s Shanghai, whose sole purpose in life is to be admitted into the toughest triad in the region: the Axe Gang. Sing and his sidekick (portly Lam Chi Chung of Shaolin Soccer) have to make a name for themselves first, and proclaim rundown Pig Sty Alley to be their first official "territory." However, Sing is more futile than fearsome, and his antics only annoy the residents of Pigsty Alley - and attract the attention of the real Axe Gang, led by Brother Sum (Chan Kwok Kwan, also of Shaolin Soccer). But Pig Sty Alley has its own secrets: unknown to Sing and the Axe Gang, hidden kung-fu masters prowl the poverty-stricken streets, ready to defend their turf to the bitter end! It's a clash of unexpected kung-fu titans and legendary martial arts styles in the hilarious, martial arts-filled Kung Fu Hustle!

Hai-yah!!! If I was 10 and watched this film I would have high-kicked my way out of the cinema. But as a, *ahem*, mature and non-too lithe adult.. I just made do with imagining I was high-kicking. Although I didn't kick and punch my way out of the cinema, I can understand how Stephen Chow felt when he saw his first Bruce Lee film. If this was the feeling he was trying to recreate for his audience, his effort is not too shabby at all. Three years in the making, Kung Fu Hustle is worth the wait. It opens with bang at the police station and ends in a candy store. In between, the movie kicks up some serious 'fu' from the slums of the deliciously named Pig Sty Alley to the heavens and back again, with dancing criminals thrown in to liven up the proceedings. The wacky comedy deceptively hides the pedigree of this production. Yuen Woo Ping and Sammo Hung were credited as choreographers. Sony put up in some big bucks and Chow wrote and directed. The editing and cinematography is superb as well, although you'd probably be too busy laughing to notice much of that on first viewing. The set design is also excellent-the loving attention to detail on the fictional 1920s sin-city [modelled on Shanghai] and Pig Sty Alley, with its many references to the period is a marvellous Western shanty town-like recreation. Chow is credited with creating these so-called 'nonsense' or 'mou le tou' comedies. That implies his comedies do not make sense or you won't get his humour. Rubbish, I say. The gags in Hustle made a hell lot of sense to me and to the rest of the audience who were too busy cacking their pants to even think about anything else. He still has a strong pulse for what's funny and the jokes here are reminiscent of his earlier works, like From Beijing With Love or Forbidden City Cop.Admittedly, several familiar themes such are the 'zero to hero'central story and the food-related love interest [this time she sells ice-cream] are repeated but that's a minor detraction. Although Chow's mug is all over the poster, his screen time is a lot less. This could be because Yuen Wah and Yuen Qiu are adept at stealing all his thunder but it is more likely Chow has written himself a smaller role because above all else, Kung Fu Hustle is Chow's heartfelt but wacky homage to the genre. Worthy of repeated viewings and definitely worthy of the DVD purchase too. 9.5 bum cracks out of 10 by Ching Yee - heroic-cinema.com |

My hat goes off to Stephen Chow!
| I absolutely loved this film. Everything about it was wonderful to me. The directing is great, the acting is convincing, the set is beautiful, the music is complementary and so on. Plus it has all the elements I love in a film- comedy, action, and a touch of romance. The story has such a great meaning behind it too. I suggest that if you have not seen it, to do so. Most likely you will not be disappointed. |

Great supplements
| It's disappointing that Sony Pictures had to wait 7 extra months to deliver a 2-disc Kung Fu Hustle edition, but there are enough extras here to warrant the extra purchase - if supplements are your thing. The commentary from Stephen Chow and his buddies is fun stuff, and it's subtitled in English. The other supplements are cool too, and we can finally see outtakes from the film collected on a DVD. Again, it's too bad that Sony didn't do this for the 1st release, but this is standard practice for video companies nowadays. If you really must own one copy of Kung Fu Hustle, sell your old version and buy this new one. |

Kung Fu Comedy King
| This is one of the best movies that came out of Hong Kong. Full of ideas, full of parody, slapstick humour, full of copycats (in a good way), heaps of tougue 'n' cheek...... Stephen Chow, Yuen Wah, Yuen Qiu, etc. are just over the top hilarious. Eva Huang Shengyi is simply one of the most beautiful women in the world. Although a mute in this movie, her actions communicated a thousand words. She's the "it" girl. I believed nearly every man (and woman) in the cinema is captivated by her beauty. I watched this movie twice at the cinema. Once, about a year ago (with the Chinese audience) and just two days ago with the Westerners at Hoyts Merrylands cinemas in Merrylands, Sydney, Australia. So this movie must be very, very good. |

OK film
|
To be honest, most people expect Stephen Chows film are suppose to be funny. Kung Fu Hustle is more on a film based on astonishing special effects and Stephens interest in ancient and modern Kung Fu. The film will not strike to the audience as extremely funny, however, there are a few scenes which will laugh your head off. The storyline was interesting and held potential to be better but I felt the movie did not justified this especially adding classic cartoon effects, which I think spoiled the nature of the movie. In movie comparison, Shaolin Soccer was spot-on and it is a huge success because it had an excellent storyline with many memorable funny moments and the effects helped contributed towards it. Personally, Kung Fu Hustle was disappointing for me and to be honest I would rather re-watch Stephens old classics from 1990s than seeing this with movie with amazing effects. I think this movie would appeal to Westerners rather than the locals who enjoyed and supported Stephens ridiculous sense of humour. Maybe Mr Chow wanted to be recognised as a serious director rather than a comedian. |
