江戸中期の浅草。浪人の弥五右衛門は、旗本の愚連隊と衝突するものの、地元の用心棒・権兵衛の出現でおさまる。同じ晩、弥五右衛門は凄腕の浪人・源内と大喧嘩をはじめるが、これも権兵衛の手で落着した。実は源内は、女スリのお新に貢がせて、湯女のもとへ通っているような女たらし。権兵衛は、そんなお新にひそかに想いを寄せていた。一方、弥五右衛門の住む長屋では、浪人の孫八郎が帰参を夢見て妹と暮していたが、食うに困り、帰参に必要な若殿拝領の短刀を手離してしまい…。
エンターテインメント時代劇の巨匠・マキノ雅弘が贈る、渾身のアクション時代劇。マキノ監督が20歳の時に撮った同名作のセルフ・リメイクで、あふれるユーモアと悲哀、真剣勝負の怒りと気迫が詰め込まれている。女たらしだがカッコ良く決める源内役は、名優・近衛十四郎。弥五右衛門には、旧作に別役で出演していた河津清三郎が扮し、飄々とした演技を光らせている。
