With the notable exception of French-Vietnamese director Tran Anh Hung, over the years Vietnamese cinema has failed to find a voice on the global stage. This may be changing, however, as new filmmakers and stories emerge, starting with Luu Huynh's The White Silk Dress which won the Audience Award at the 2006 Pusan Film Festival. Five years in the making, The White Silk Dress ranks as the most expensive Vietnamese film ever made with a budget of US$2 million. Starting out as a music video and TV commercial director, Luu Huynh makes his feature film debut in ambitious fashion, telling a grand story through the eyes of ordinary people struggling against the times in war-torn French-colonized Vietnam. The White Silk Dress is also the first Vietnamese film to employ flying-cam filming, capturing the country's beautiful natural scenery and the devastating battle scenes.

The White Silk Dress revolves around one remarkable woman's determination to hold her family together. Vietnam's top model Truong Ngo Ang stars as Dau, a servant girl whose only hopes for the future lie with hunchbacked servant Gu (Khanh Quoc Nguyen). Abandoned as a baby, Gu has nothing to his name besides the white silk dress he was found wrapped in, the white silk dress that he passes to Dau for their marriage. A white silk wedding dress represents tradition, purity, and sacrifice, and from the moment she puts it on, Dau is determined to dedicate her life to her family. As civil war begins to break out, the newlywed couple head south to start a new life. Gu gives birth to two daughters, and the family of four eke out a living in poverty conditions. To send her girls to school, Dau has no choice but to cut her white dress to make uniforms for them. But with the war edging south, their fragile lives are thrown into further turmoil.
