Koyote - Dance Best and 9.5 comes in two discs that upgrade Shinji's vocals and Koyote's trademark upbeat sounds. The first CD consists of fifteen songs from their third album through their ninth album, and also includes two new tracks. The second CD contains a non-stop remix medley of lesser known songs that deserve a second listen. New track "Love Formula" (Track 1) is created by hitmakers Kim Do Hoon, who helped raise Lee Hyo Lee, Wheesung, and SG Wannabe into stardom, and Kim Sae Jin who produced hit songs for Lyn, GAVY NJ, and Typhoon. "Love Formula" shows all the signs of being another hit for Koyote.

Famous for their trademark catchy dance/pop songs reminiscent of '80s music, Koyote has emerged as the genre's enduring darling over the last decade. Their long standing career stems from the ability to retain mainstream appeal with their addictive sounds, unassuming and down-to-earth mannerism, dynamic and vibrant stage performances, and last but not least, Shinji, their lone female member and the group's lead vocalist. Almost ten years have passed since she made her singing debut at the tender age of 18, but Shinji certainly needs no tuning up. The multi-talented singer digests every high key with such ease and finesse, delivering her signature husky, splitting tones whenever needed. Not to say that her cute sexy looks don't add to her aesthetic appeal as well. Teamed up with charming, clutzy Kim Jong Min (who is currently serving his compulsory military service) and rapper Bbaek Ga, Koyote succeeds in exuding hearty, snug warmth and friendliness through their music.
Always the popular pick at numerous karaoke functions, most of their music is all about having a good time. Koyote Dance Best and 9.5 features an alluring collection of their past chart-topping hits from their third album through their ninth album, plus two new songs, all conveniently packed into two discs. It contains the group's first smash hit Soon Jung, a nostalgic, retro dance number that weaves out simple, easy-listening rhythm punctuated by hooky, uplifting chorus. Pumping up the volume even further are hypnotic, pounding techno numbers like Mi Ryeon, Shi Ryeon, Passion, Pa Ran ("Blue"), Jahjonshim ("Pride"), Yeol Jung ("Fervor"), and Sarang Gongsik ("Love Formula"). Frankly, many of their signature hits put you in the same familiar trance. In fact, another similarity exists notably in their song titles featuring double syllables - perhaps intended to enhance the catchy aspect. Ask me to sing one of their songs, and you'll most likely catch me confusing the song with its title. Nevertheless, despite the apparent danger of complacency, the overall springy, invigorating melodies can add up to be quite an addictive force - a welcome guilty pleasure which makes Koyote Dance Best and 9.5 an attractive collection. |
