YesAsia Editorial Description
Renowned Sixth Generation director Lou Ye paid a high price for screening Summer Palace at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival: a hefty five-year ban from filmmaking in China. Lou's latest film to fly afoul of Mainland censors after Weekend Lover and Suzhou River, Summer Palace may also be his most accomplished work yet, telling a sweeping grassroots story of passion and politics over 16 years in the life of a restless young woman brilliantly essayed by Hao Lei. With its candid sex scenes and direct portrayal of the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, it's not hard to understand why Summer Palace was banned in China. Taking the spring of 1989 as a turning point, Summer Palace's tale of personal and political upheaval is the voice of a lost generation that bears the pain of the past, the alienation of the present, and the uncertainties of the future. Spanning from 1987 to 2003, Summer Palace provides a profile of revolution and inertia, sensations and emotions, as lives change and don't change in a constantly growing world.
In the autumn of 1988, Yu Hong (Hao Lei) moves from her provincial hometown to Beijing to begin her studies at Beijing University. Feisty, pensive, and emotional, Yu Hong develops a passionate, but troubled relationship with classmate Zhou Wei (Guo Xiaodong, An Empress and the Warriors), the man whom she holds briefly but loves for a lifetime. The late 80s are exciting and idealistic times for the students of Beida, exploding in 1989 in a wave of fervent hope and devastated tears. After Tiananmen, Zhou Wei moves to Germany, and Yu Hong returns to her hometown, the first of many stops as she wanders from city to city and man to man, trying to come to terms with her restless heart.

Director You's Masterpiece
| One of a spate of recent movies from China which examine the changes going on in the country as it moves out of the long shadow of its past. Both the values of three millennia of Chinese heritage and the recently-acquired Marxist/Maoist approach to society are being jettisoned in deference to modernization, whatever eventual form that might take. What has come about is in no way a smooth and certain transition to a better future. With little or nothing of the past left to cling to, people struggle, sometimes together and sometimes in isolation (and sometimes seemingly both simultaneously), toward an unknown, unpredictable future. "Summer Palace", in my estimation, captures time and place as masterfully as any film of my acquaintance. Sweeping events are caught not on a mural of gigantic proportion but with a succession of intimate canvases, each deftly executed with just the right amount of detail, even if what is communicated might be negative or ambiguous. A beautiful achievement and one which earned the director and producer lengthy government-decreed bans from working in their country, a country for which they obviously care deeply. Makes a suitable companion piece to "Lost in Beijing", "Platform", "Shower", "Still Life", and even the more openly comic "Getting Home". |
