Sabu (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

One of Miike Takashi's few period films, the 2002 film Sabu is another testament to the maverick filmmaker's versatile repertoire. A tame offering by Miike standards - though still boasting its fair share of blood - Sabu eschews the bombastic violence and twisted characters that some viewers may have come to expect from the director, and tells a compelling tale of friendship and betrayal in the Tokugawa era. Interestingly, Sabu is actually a television movie, but it was shot on film stock usually used for theatrical features and boasts the A-list casting of Fujiwara Tatsuya (Death Note) and Tsumabuki Satoshi (Nada Sou Sou, Waterboys). With handsome art direction and costumes, steady camerawork, and a haunting score, the film is an effective and moody period piece that should appeal to a wide audience while still satisfying Miike aficionados.

Though poor, Eiji (Fujiwara Tatsuya) and Sabu (Tsumabuki Satoshi) don't have much to complain about, living out normal, honest lives as laborers in Tokugawa Japan. The quiet times run dry, however, when Eiji is framed for stealing and exiled to an island prison camp. Thrown into a rough and brutal environment, he must fight each and everyday to survive. Life on the island slowly transforms him, and his only motivation for survival is revenge on those who brought him to this wretched existence. Sabu tries everything he can to help free Eiji, but when the friends finally meet again, it is a completely different man that stands before Sabu.

Sabu (Satoshi Tsumabuki) and Eiji (Tatsuya Fujiwara) were best friends since they were small. They served as poor trainees in a traditional umbrella store. When they grew up, it was time for them to turn on a new leaf and live on their own. Unforturnately, Eiji was falsely accused as a thief. He was then isolated in a deserted island and forced to work as a coolie. Eiji was very angry and upset. He kept on thinking of ways to take revenge on the person who falsely incriminate him. During this period, Sabu kept on supporting Eiji and visiting him in jail. At the beginning, Eiji was jealous of Sabu and became hostile to him. As time went by Eiji met many pals in the jail and they worked hard to fight against many difficults. Finally, Eiji learnt to compromise to his fate. After many years of isolation, when Eiji was about to recover his freedom, a cruel fact was revealed to him by Sabu and it drove Eiji crazy.....

This is an awarded novel written by Shugoro Yamamoto which has touched millions of hearts in Japan. Beside depicting the kind of true and sentimental friendship, it also portrayed the unfair reality of the society that will surely move everyone's heart.
