Persona 4 continues the popular Megami Tensei series with some welcome twists to its already proven formula. The player takes on the role of a student at Yasaoinaba High School, who joins with his friends to solve a series of murders in their town. The students are drawn in when they investigate a rumor swirling around a late night television channel called Mayonaka TV. Rumor has it that if a person watches Mayonaka TV at midnight, they will be able to see their "other self" reflected in the television. But Mayonaka TV is more than a mirror - it's a gateway into another world, and it may be the very reason that people are dying. Only by entering the shadow-infested world will the murders be solved.

The Megami Tensei series from Atlus is known for its occult themes and modern urban settings, but Persona 4 moves the action to the rural countryside, as the player is immersed in a murder mystery taking place in the little town of Yasaoinaba. As usual with the Megami Tensei series, action is turn-based, with players being able to call upon their magic or weapon-wielding "Persona" to battle for them against shadowy devils. The series is also known for its varied simulation elements, where players can enhance their battle abilities through everyday activities in a school setting, like socializing and studying. The moody music, attractive anime character designs, and dark, atmospheric tone also add to the series' distinctive appeal.
