YesAsia Editorial Description
Deeply mired in debt, compulsive gambler Shinya (Okada Junichi) resorts to joining a scam ring to pay off his loans. While living in the gutters, he meets Hisako (Miyazaki Aoi), a young woman tracing the story of her mother's (also Miyazaki Aoi) past love with a comedian (Ito Atsushi). In another parts of town, B-list idol Myako (Hirayama Aya) is on the verge of losing her job, but an opportunity suddenly appears that changes both her career and her relationship with otaku idol-chaser Yusuke (Tsukamoto Takashi). Meanwhile, power businessman Ryutaro (Miura Tomokazu) is so inspired by his encounter with a homeless man (Nishida Toshiyuki) that he too decides to begin a new life on the sidewalks. As a typhoon descends upon Tokyo, unrelated lives begin to cross over and a strange twist of fate befalls these quirky souls.

"Flowers in the Shadows" seems to be a movie in the shadows, an overlooked gem about the causes and effects of missed opportunities. Ingeniously constructed like an intertwining set of Mobius loops, the film features fascinating characters whose lives intersect in unexpected ways. At the center of it all are Shinya (Okada Junichi) and Hisako (Miyazaki Aoi, adorably cute as ever). Shinya, a tour company bus driver, is nearing the end of his rope; crushed by overweening parental expectations, Shinya has alienated his family and coworkers and angered loan sharks by borrowing money that never gets repaid because he squanders it on his all-consuming pachinko habit. Hisako is a lonely young woman determined to track down the failed burlesque hall comedian who was her late mother's one true love, but who had left her mother in pursuit of the stripper for whom he fruitlessly pined. With nowhere left to turn, Shinya decides to help Hisako in her quest. Filling out the story in delightfully surprising ways are downmarket idol singer Miyako (Hirayama Aya) and her besotted otaku Yusuke (Tsukamoto Takahashi), a homeless man known as Moses (Nishida Toshiyuki) who appears to be the father of a famed baseball pitcher, and salaryman Ryutaro (Miura Tomokazu) who is drawn to Moses's seemingly carefree lifestyle. The film's first half effectively mixes zany comedy, affecting human stories, and a bit of violence in a manner akin to the films of Itami Juzo. The second half turns much more sentimental, as the heartbreaking connections between these seemingly disparate lives are revealed. The complexity of the film's story requires an attentive audience, but the superb cast and the multiple resonances of the intriguing stories make "Flowers in the Shadows" a richly rewarding experience. |
