YesAsia Editorial Description

After inspiring an anime series, hit TV dramas in Taiwan and Japan, and a blockbuster movie, Kamio Yoko's immensely popular romance manga Hana Yori Dango comes to Korean television! KBS's highly anticipated Boys Over Flowers spins the modern-day Cinderella tale of a poor, but spunky schoolgirl at an exclusive academy who attracts the interests of the four ultra-rich and ultra-handsome princes of the school known as F4. Ku Hye Sun from The Strongest Chil Woo and The King and I stars as the tough-cookie heroine of the drama. As for the male leads, meet Korea's F4: breakout star Lee Min Ho from school dramas I Am Sam and Mackerel Run, idol heartthrob Kim Hyun Joong from boy band SS501, rising star Kim Bum (East of Eden), and Kim Jun of pop group T-max.

Tough, hardworking Geum Jan Di (Ku Hye Sun) attends an exclusive school, but she finds her shallow, privileged classmates unbearable, especially the notorious F4. Rich, handsome, and arrogant, Goo Joon Pyo (Lee Min Ho), Yoon Ji Hoo (Kim Hyun Joong), Song Woo Bin (Kim Joon), and So Yi Jung (Kim Bum) are the kings of the school and no one, not even the teachers, dare challenge them. No one, that is, except Jan Di. Angry at their rudeness, Jan Di tells off F4 leader Joon Pyo, bringing a world of trouble upon herself. The proud and persistent Joon Pyo falls hard for feisty Jan Di, but she shares a connection with the quiet, sensitive Ji Hoo. Caught between the two friends, who will Jan Di choose?

The runaway hit of 2009, Boys Over Flowers attracted high viewership ratings and buzz throughout its broadcast, turning its young cast into household names and starting off a Kgotboda Namja trend in Korea. Lee Min Ho, Korean entertainment's newest poster boy, won the Best Newcomer Actor award at the 45th Baeksang Arts Awards, while co-star Kim Hyun Joong took the Popularity Award. Boys Over Flowers also features supporting appearances from Han Chae Young (Tale of Autumn) as Ji Hoo's first love, Kim Hyun Ju (Glass Slippers) as Joon Pyo's sister, and Kim So Eun (Sad Love Song) as Jan Di's best friend.

This edition comes with an exclusive 34-page photobook.

Beautiful Story of Hana Yori Dango Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This korean version of Hana Yori Dango has a power of drama details. This drama makes us understand more about the characters than before. We can be closer to their relationship and love. From the first eps until the end, we can see the improvement of their acting especially for all of the young actors.

This drama is ok to be our collection, the packaging is also beautiful (i am really love it). The english subtitle is really helpful for me who can't understand the korean language, the english is really easy to be understand, and make us understand their words ha ha ha ... but for the dubbing language i choose to hear the original one (korean), because it's really weird for me to watch korean drama in other language / dubbing ha ha ha ...

Giving F4 and Jandi...Five! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is a charmingly gorgeous K-TV drama. F4 (whose handkerchiefs even have personal butlers) certainly have moody charismatic confidence, contrasting their fragility and need for love. Angelic upstart Jandi though soon melts F4’s ice when she joins Shinhwa University for red carpet walkers. F4 are initially disdainful especially ‘red card’ bully Junpyo, who when ‘throwing his toys out of his pram’ certainly as tractor sized tantrums! But F4 change when Jandi high kicks Junpyo in the mush for spreading bad rumors about her. Junpyo sees the kick a sign of Jandi’s love, with other F4 members adopting Jandi as friend and tonic. BOF certainly had making problems. The car crashes were awful. Hyesun, Hyun Joong and Min Soo’s BOF commitments after the accidents are truly inspiring. With Sun Ja Park’s sad death, too, its amazing how everyone kept sane. Sadly Sunny (Sun Ja’s character), Ginger and Miranda are absent after the Macau episodes. It’s a shame, as this surly blighted a ‘family’ of performers enjoying making this together. Really sorry to hear of this.

But BOF wins out in the end. The F4 actors and support cast are excellent. So Eun Kim is lovely as Jandi’s mate and Hyun Joong’s otherworldly appeal (David Bowie 70s demeanour) is future cool. Even though Min Hoo and Hyun Joong are forefront characters, Bum Kim and especially T-max Joon Kim succeed with equal appeal. Hyesun, by acting, singing, drawing (Gummy’s 4th album art?) and even making a New Age music CD (Orbital electronics with period instrumentation, Hyesun?) is certainly multi-talented. Directing shorts, too? Jae Tae Ye for tips, Hyesun. ^o^

The Macau and New Caledonia settings are breathtaking. Latter filmed with brilliant va va voom aerial approach. Funny, too! Jihu’s male friend Ming in Macau? I had visions of them on a final Gondola scene at one point; flash back to their photo on Ming’s mug. Actress Min Jung Lee as Junpyo’s fiancee Jaekyung Ha is also an unexpected surprise. Her animated character is a big winner. Hyesun does exaggerate her role as Jandi, but this being a manga adaptation, all makes sense. Subtitles and DVD set I’m grateful for and a thanksgiving prayer mat required for subs! Could the ‘boys be back in town’ for “BOF 2”? Well, J & J surly would ‘fight’ another day. Exotically made, lovely cast, really nice guys (F4), tears and romance. I likey!

Great DVD purchase Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Having seen all 3 versions of HYD, Boys Over Flowers is truly my favourite, boasting stunningly shot exotic locations, beautiful sets and character wardrobes, and talented good looking actors who are perfectly cast in their roles. The money poured into this drama makes it visually a great viewing experience.

As for the boxset, it consists of an outer box which contains 3 separate volumes inside (each disc with 3 episodes each). The packaging is sturdy and well designed with image stills from the drama and their promo shots covering the inside and outer packaging. There are 3 character cards attached to each of the volumes and a photo diary (which is not the best quality) which you can write in.

Ive tested a few episodes, and I can say the subtitles are great and near perfect in translation. Sentences are grammatically correct and while I did spot a couple of occassions where words are misspelt 'thise' instead of 'these' this doesnt hinder the understanding in any way and are very rare occcurences. If I was to nitpick about the english subtitles its that sometimes they dont translate exactly word for word. What may be 2 separate sentences will be condensed and translated as one. An example I remember in ep 1 where they just translate shinhwa is a school for the top 1% but the original saying is something along the lines of 'a school for the 1%, attended for the 1%, suited for the 1%'. Not a big problem at all, as you are still able to understand the gist of what they are saying, although in some more important scenes it may annoy those who can understand korean but for those that don't I wouldnt let that put you off because most likely you won't even notice.
A nice thing also is that the NGs at the end of the episodes have been eng subbed.

Extras are NOT subbed. The last disc contains the 1 hour special talkshow with F4 including the NG segment. There is also a 1 hour 'making of/behind the scenes' of each episode. Its nothing you couldnt already watch on youtube but its nice to have it all compiled in one place. Im happy with the extras but I wish we could have seen some BTS that hadnt already been released.
OTHER:
The DVD menus are only in korean but are navigatable enough.
The picture quality is good but sometimes in bright lighting they tend to come over too 'orange', although that could just be my player. Generally though its clear and sharp.
