五月天 自傳
history of Tomorrow

History of Mayday
Mayday sang about the end of the world in 2011's Second Round so it's only appropriate that they follow with the History of Tomorrow for their ninth album. Paired with the album's Chinese title of "Autobiography," History of Tomorrow represents the band's most self-reflexive work yet, looking at the past and the passing of time in poetic manner to form a musical record of life.

History of Tomorrow begins in characteristic style with "What If We Had Never Met" (Track 1), a pop rock number that gets you in a ruminative mood right off the bat with the opening question "If we never met, where would I be?" The eminently quotable lyrics, quietly rousing refrain and tightly packed, pace-breaking climax are all classic markers of Mayday style, lending the song an air of warm familiarity even on the first listen.

This feeling of warmth and familiarity generally permeates the album as Mayday delivers the kind of catchy, stirring pop rock we've come to expect from them. The bittersweet rock ballad "Tough" (Track 7) and the feel-good "Best Day of My Life" (Track 9) reflect on life and rally around the listener. The frantically fun "Party Animal" (Track 8) offers a party-hearty sequel to "Leaving the Earth's Surface," "Brotherhood" (Track 4) celebrates friendship with jazzy, brass-infused flair, and the slow songs hit straight for the heart, in particular the reminiscing breakup ballad "Here, After Us" (Track 6) which reminds of "Suddenly Missing You."

History of Tomorrow isn't just more of the same from Mayday, though, as there are quite a few standout tracks and Ashin's lyrics appeal as always. "Almost Famous" (Track 2) narrates the difficult journey of chasing music and dreams with a complex composition that carries heavy notes and dark undertones. The tempo, tone and arrangement transform as the drifting story of youth progresses, and the way the song abruptly shifts tempo throughout is outstanding, crashing different sections of the song together without buffer.

On the other brighter side of the coin is "Dokodemo Door" (Track 12) which recalls the band's growth and early days with wistful nostalgia and an uplifting spirit. Though the melody and arrangement are standard fare, the lyrics reach out with lovingly specific references of people and places. Fans will likely break out into smiles when Ashin sings "Past Xingtian Temple, 2nd floor rear flat, that small room / Monster's mom prepared chicken leg for midnight snack."

"Life of Planet" (Track 10) ranks among the band's most dramatic, captivating works with its Life of Pi-referencing imagery and monumental refrain about sailing into the unknown future. The way the song utilizes hard beats, flitting piano chords and orchestral exclamation marks creates a story in sounds.

Saving the best for last, the Stone-composed "Final Chapter" (Track 13) completes the autobiography with the final chapter of life. Starting gently with a fluttering piano melody, the song waxes delicately on transience and death, building to an outburst of emotions in the refrain as Ashin sings with increasing volume and power. Guitars and drums suddenly fill out the melody before fading out, and then returning again in full force as the song climbs to its intense finale. Ashin's ability to write memorable lyrics that are both poetically pensive and rooted in real world references is on extraordinary display: "Success is like a sand castle, life like waves / The ocean's spray will turn all illusions hollow / Savings and buildings, struggle and ambition / All leave after the show."

Lest the album end on too much of a downer, bonus track "Do Mi So" (Track 15) – which is preceded by the silent 19-second "What's Your Story" (Track 14) – sneaks in with a short and sweet acoustic campus folk number performed in chorus by Mayday, Jiang Kun Yu and 831's Xiao Ju. Like T1 21 31 21, the delightful song goes back to the basics with fun lyrics using guitar chords to sing about school days and free hearts.
