'91年12月から講談社刊「なかよし」に連載された武内直子の原作によるコミック「美少女戦士セーラームーン」は、'92年にはTVアニメ化されて話題となり、その後劇場版アニメやミュージカルも大ヒットするなど、社会現象と言われるほどの一大ブームを巻き起こした。また、2003年にはテレビ実写版も放映され、好評を博した。
本作には、2004年1月に東京・池袋サンシャイン劇場にて行われた2004年ウィンタースペシャルミュージカル「美少女戦士セーラームーン 火球王妃降臨」の模様を収録。主人公・セーラームーン役の黒木マリナほか美少女戦士たちの活躍を、存分に堪能することが出来る。

An update of a classic Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
For those who know about the first stage Sailor Moon musicals, you should be acquainted with "Eien Densetsu", which happened to be the final performance for the first stage cast. It was very emotional and featured aruably, some of the best talent yet seen in a Sailor Moon musical. This DVD here, "Kakyuu Ouhi Kourin" (the self proclaimed second stage final) attempts to revive this successful final first stage musical.

How does it turn out? For one, not as emotional and also, some of the actors have let their predesscors down. Miyazawa Akiko looks fantastic as Beryl, but her vocals are so strained that she can become irritating. Pretty much the rest of the cast members just do not have the same kind of mastery of their characters that their first stage predesccors had. However some characters shine through, including Kuroki Marina who stars as Sailor Moon and the beautiful and talented Hosaka Yuko who makes a strong willed and serene Sailor Pluto.

Some songs in this musical are borrowed from the original (as is the habit of the later musicals: borrowing old songs and maybe changing a few lyrics here and there which can be tiresome after a while)which would be more nostalgic if they were just performed with the same conviction and skill as the original cast. Their are some new songs, but they were borrowed from the previous musical "Ryuusei Densetsu" (which this musical is supposedly the Kaiteban of).

The plot remains a bit choppy and confusing as the original, but it was nice to see the Shittenou back in action again, even if their purpose in the musical felt a little unnecssary.

On a positive note, the special effects and lighting are at their height in this musical and there are some funny/cute moments. The dancing is more modernized therefore "Sexier" (this could be seen as positive or negative considering this is based on a young girl's manga/anime)and all the singing is live (as is the case with just about every musical starring Marina as Moon). Overall, if you are looking for a fun Sailor Moon musical then this is fine, that is if you aren't concerned about finding the best there is avaible. If you want more or less the same story and plot but with better talent then you are probably better off buying one of the original first stage "Eien Densetsu" musicals. Either way, the musicals need your support if they ever hope to return from hiatus, so take a chance and buy a DVD and see why the story of Eien Densetsu and Kakyuu Ouhi Kourin is so popular with the fans of these musicals.
