Yang Xuefei is the first musician from China to study classical guitar in the West. As a musical pioneer, Miss Yang seeks to develop a repertoire of Chinese music for classical guitar. On "40 Degrees North", she sets gorgeous melodies from her native China side by side with classics from Spain, the traditional home of classical guitar. The result is a delight.

Miss Yang plays with sensitivity, passion, skill, and a surprising sense of humor. Her virtuosity is such that at times it seems impossible that a single guitarist could generate such intricate sounds. My particular favorites from this superb album are the supremely romantic "Valses Poeticos" by Granados, "The Chinese Garden" by Stephen Goss (a reworking of folk melodies), and the very familiar "The Butterfly Lovers". Reshaping "Butterfly Lovers" as a work for solo guitar lends the piece an intimacy that perfectly suits its theme.

Yang Xuefei's "40 Degrees North" is a joy. I recommend it wholeheartedly.
