YesAsia Editorial Description

A young woman caught between life and death has 49 Days to save herself in SBS's hit fantasy romance. Bubbly bride-to-be Ji Hyun (Nam Gyu Ri, Life is Beautiful) has seemingly the perfect life until she gets into a car accident that leaves her body comatose and her spirit in limbo. If she can collect pure teardrops from three people who truly love her in 49 days, she can return to life. The catch: She has to borrow the body of Yi Kyung (Lee Yo Won, Queen Seon Duk) during this period. The second catch: It turns out the people around her aren't as pure as she thought.

Ji Hyun's fiance Min Ho (Bae Soo Bin, Brilliant Legacy) turns out to be a cheating liar with ulterior motives, while her grumpy frenemy Han Kang (Jo Hyun Jae, Love Letter) actually holds a torch for her. Both of them end up falling in love with Ji Hyun again while she's in Yi Kyung's body! Watching over all this is the smart-aleck, motorcycle-riding Grim Reaper (Jung Il Woo, Return of Iljimae), or Scheduler as he calls himself, whose own forgotten mortal past is connected to Yi Kyung and Ji Hyun. More than a trendy romance, 49 Days is an affecting, unconventional human drama that challenges both the protagonists and its audiences to think twice about the meaning and value of life, love, and friendship.

This edition comes with 49 minutes of English-subtitled special features.

"PERFECT ... The most satisfying ending I’ve seen in a long time." - Dramabeans

A soul-searching story that touches and surprises at every turn, the Korean TV drama series 49 Days follows a young woman's amazing journey between life and death – with some help from a motorcycle-riding Grim Reaper.

Right before her wedding, Ji-hyun (Nam Gyu-Ri) gets injured and falls into a coma. The Grim Reaper (Jung Il-Woo), or “Scheduler” as he likes to call himself, gives her a chance to return to life. Borrowing the body of Yi-kyung (Lee Yo-Won), she has 49 days to collect genuine teardrops from three people who truly love her. This should be a piece of cake since everyone loves Ji-hyun – or so she thought.

As the days tick down, Ji-hyun learns that the people around her are not as they seem. Her interim life as Yi-kyung gets even more complicated when her friend Gang (Jo Hyun-Jae, Love Letter) and cheating fiancé Min-ho (Bae Soo-Bin, Brilliant Legacy) both fall in love with her.

Only pure tears allowed
Many Korean dramas aim to make you cry. Few earn the tears as well as 49 Days does. For one thing, much of the story actually revolves around collecting tears.

Doll-like singer-turned-actress Nam Gyu Ri fares surprisingly well in the leading role of Ji Hyun, a privileged, happy-go-lucky bride-to-be who falls into a coma after an accident. A young grim reaper, or Scheduler (Jung Il Woo), shows up and offers Ji Hyun's detached soul a mission to save herself. She has 49 days to collect pure teardrops from three people (other than family members) who truly love her. During this time, she can borrow the body of the sullen, suicidal woman who caused her near death, Yi Kyung (Lee Yo Won), but she can't reveal her real identity to anyone. Yi Kyung works at night and sleeps all day, so Ji Hyun gets to use her body during the day. From here on, it's Lee Yo Won who takes over more of the drama's leading actress duties.

At first, Ji Hyun thinks that it will be easy to collect three teardrops. Instead, she learns that the people and relationships she's taken for granted are not as they seem. Her fiance and best friend are actually cheating on her, and there are too many factors that turn grief and friendship into something other than love. Collecting even one teardrop is difficult, let alone three. Ji Hyun finally begins to grow up, and understand herself and the people around her. But what will await her at the end of 49 days?

Ji Hyun's 49-day journey is full of K-Drama happenings. As Yi Kyung, she discovers the deep bond she has with friend Han Kang (played with grumpy charm by Jo Hyun Jae) - after a lot of romantic comedy bickering. She uncovers her dastardly fiance Min Ho's (Bae Soo Bin) plot to take over her father's company, while Min Ho unexpectedly falls for her. The drama also slowly unravels Yi Kyung's weepy backstory, and the fateful ties that connect Ji Hyun, Yi Kyung, Han Kang, and the Scheduler. If that doesn't already sound like a full plate, in the course of the 49 days, other characters start catching on that something's amiss, and launch their own missions to figure each other out.

Many of these narrative elements and relationship conflicts are common in Korean dramas, but 49 Days' relatively unique premise adds a twist to familiar conflicts, and the story refrains from going into melodramatic overdrive. This helps to balance the casting with the characters. Lee Yo Won is clearly a better actress than Nam Gyu Ri, but the drama gives space for the younger actress to grow with the role and the audience such that her Ji Hyun holds up with Lee Yo Won's Ji Hyun. The two actresses' ability to reinforce each other's portrayals of the same character is essential to the drama, and their pairing with Jo Hyun Jae's "Kang ah".

As winning as grumpy, upright Jo Hyun Jae may be, Bae Soo Bin and Jung Il Woo clock in more angsting mileage. Bae manages to eke empathy if not redemption for his turn as the bad guy who confusedly falls for the woman he betrayed in a different guise. Jung Il Woo provides early laughs as the flippant, motorcycle-riding grim reaper who grudgingly helps Ji Hyun out, but it's tears galore once his backstory kicks in.

49 Days gets plenty heart-wrenching when it comes time to collect the audience's tears, but the scope goes beyond the tragic love angle. It is less the romance that is heart-wrenching, but the process of coming to terms with life, death, separation, and oneself. In this respect, the drama aims for more than just making people cry. 49 Days isn't collecting any old teardrop, only the pure ones.

great drama Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I've been watching a lot of boring dramas lately, until I came upon 49 days. it really kept my interest throughout the moive. The main 2 female lead actresses were amazing. When I first saw the title of this drama and read the description, I did not have high hopes, but as I started watching it I can honestly say it is one of the better ones out there- I saw this online for free, so am not going to buy it for this price, but if you really like it or enjoy watching drama's on tv this is a good choice. ( i have friends that hate watching dramas on the computer) There is also 1 song in the drama that I love- hope this helps.

Heart Wrenching! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
One of the best drama of ALL time! Number 1 in my list of drama. This drama teaches you alot about life. It teaches that you should cherished every day, hours, minutes, and seconds of your life because you will never know when, when it is time for you to go. It teaches you to love and cherish the peope you have (family and friends). I have already purchased the OSTs and I got to admit that the songs are beautiful. I already saw this drama twice and will purchased this drama to keep and rewatch it again. It has been months now and the feeling towards this drama has never fade. Hope to see more drama like this in the future. This drama is even better than Secret Garden.

It is coming out in October! I can't wait for it to come out. 49 Days waiting. Tears are falling....
