Ivy Ling Po, star of The Temple of the Red Lotus, tears up the screen as a jealous, murderous movie star, who, like seemingly all "film noir" vixens, wants to kill off her husband. While she's infuriated that the hitman she hires bungles the job, she's delighted that her husband is found guilty for the killer's "murder". There's only one thing between him and execution: his wife's loving and plucky female screenwriter - played by the great Chiao Chiao co-star of both the One Armed Swordsman films and Jackie Chan's Police Story II.

Another Feather In Her Cap!
| Ivy Ling Po continues to astound with her versatility in acting. Here she tackles the mean role of a coldhearted murderess and succeeds in it admirably. You even root for her and empathise with her as her character is multi-dimensioned. Her acting is so wonderful here that you overlook the fact that the film's plot is based loosely on a Hollywood movie. I wish Celestial will now release more of her wu xia epics so that more people will realise she was excellent as a swordswoman in films like The 14 Amazons, The Mighty One, Duel For Gold and Fingers Of Doom. How many people realised she was a onearmed swordswoman in The Crimson Charm? Meanwhile, grab this slick taut thriller as it is one of the best in its genre. |

Ling Po, a popular actress known for playing male roles in period costume drama gets to exercise her "acting" muscles in this rare foray into this modern dress thriller, her performance was adequate if not above average. The screenplay was a shameless lifting (without giving credit of course) of Frederick Knott's "Dial M for Murder" made famous in the 50s by Hitchcock,Now that I pointed this out, all curiosity seekers may want to know that Ivy did not play the Grace Kelly role, she played the Ray Milland role and Kwan San get to play the Grace Kelly role, now that's a switch for you ! |
