Outcasts find a home

In his Tora-San films, Director Yamada Yoji showed an ongoing affection for the misfit, the oddball character with a good heart who simply finds it too great of a challenge to fit into a conformist society. This theme moves front and center in the poignant and charming "A Class to Remember". "A Class to Remember" tells of a junior high night school class, a place where misfits of all ages have congregated and have found a home, a nonjudgmental place in which they and their misfit teacher create a mutually supportive family for each other. As the film progresses, we learn a bit about each of the class members and about the teachers. Yes, it is sentimental, but it feels true to life, never forced. The film does not so much tell a linear story as bring these wounded characters to vivid life. Director Yamada is a master at painting sympathetic portraits of this kind. "A Class to Remember" is very highly recommended. It just may leave you wondering how you, too, may be able to reach out to these troubled souls. |
