Product Information

Director: Kobayashi Masaki

In this grim yet exquisitely composed film, Kobayashi Masaki delves into the world of the 17th-century samurai, examining "the honor in death--and the death of honor" (Time). After an unemployed samurai is forced to commit harakiri before a feudal lord, his father-in-law returns to the scene, seemingly to play out the same agonizing suicide ritual. Kobayashi begins at the story's end, then recounts the narrative as told by the father-in-law. The effect is almost unbearably suspenseful, leading to an explosive climax of supreme defiance and samurai swordplay, erupting from a battle of wills, called bluffs, and hotly defended honour. For connoisseurs of samurai action, Harakiri is not to be missed.

A great movie not available in it's original scope?! Why did this video company decide to release this Japanese classics to the Chinese market on DVD in their "A Century of Japanese Cinema" edition and not release it in the typical Widescreen format, which is a standard DVD format. I have to refer back to the VHS version to view the original 2.35:1 Aspect Ratio? For-shame! This movie is a classic and one of the most notable characteristics of this movie is the beautiful B&W photography. Yet, there has yet to be a DVD version in letterboxed with English subtitles. If it's not letterboxed, it's not worth watching. Pan and Scan or Full Frame 4x3 re-edits the movie and re-focuses the audience attention away from what was originally intended by the Director and the Director of Photography. Do no support Full Frame!
