導演︰村上龍
Director: Murakami Ryu

Actress Moeko comes to Singapore to look for Kariya, the man she loves. She checks in at Raffles Hotel and finds out that he lives in a big house with his wife and children. In the darkness, Moeko suddenly stands in front of Kariya with a camera in her hands. The shutter’s sound resounds through the room. When it fades away, Moeko has vanished… Raffles Hotel is the third cinematic venture adapted from his own book by the famous writer Murakami Ryu, who debuted with a semi-autobiographical novel, Almost Transparent Blue in1980 and won the Akutagawa Prize, the most authoritative literary prize in Japan. Depicting many graphic acts of sex and violence, the film raised much controversies during its release in Japan.

???????? Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
"Raffles Hotel" is a baffling film directed by novelist Murakami Ryu. A Japanese actress travels to Singapore in search of a rich man, who apparently had been her former lover. The actress seems to have only a shaky grasp on reality. She pokes around Singapore, always seeming to find him, but what she finds is a mirage. Just when we think she's totally taken leave of her senses, she actually does find the rich man.

Now that they are reunited, a strange thing happens -- or does it? She may (or may not) be trying to kill him. Twice she (inadvertently?) shoots arrows that narrowly miss him. Finally, while he is sleeping, she appears to grab an arrow and be heading toward the bedroom with it... But is it really an arrow?

You'll have to watch this odd film to find out. This is a deeply flawed movie. It fails to offer any characters about which the viewer cares very much. Its direction is pedestrian. Its story is inexplicable. And don't be misled by YesAsia's description of the movie: It contains no graphic depictions of sex or violence.

One more thing -- the film provides English subtitles even when its Asian characters are speaking English, but they are astonishingly mangled subtitles. For example, when the rich man inadvertently gets punched in the stomach, we hear him say in English, "That was some punch," but the subtitles at the bottom of the screen read, "She's my girlfriend." Huh?!? It made me wonder whether the English subtitles were similarly messed up when the characters were speaking Japanese and Chinese.

On the plus side, the film makes Singapore look like an interesting place. On the minus side, well, pretty much everything else. Recommended only for diehard Murakami Ryu fans.
