導演:五社英雄
Director:Gosha Hideo
Shiba, a wandering ronin, encounter a band of peasants who have kidnapped the daughter of their dictorial magistrate, in hopes of coercing from him a reduction in taxes. Shiba takes up their fight, joined by two renegades from the magistrate's guard, Sakura and Kikyo. The three outlaws find themselves in a battle to the death. This is the directorial debut of Gosha Hideo, considered to be the master of samurai action films in Japan. Like his other as follow, Three Outlaw Samurai reveals an expectation strong visual sense in Gosha's direction. Almost every frame is well composed and effective. The film salo contains some of the best choreographed and most graphically violent swordfighting scenes in the history of the samurai cinema.

Timeless chanbara classic

"Three Outlaw Samurai" is the seventh Gosha Hideo-directed film I've seen and, although I recommend them all, this one may be my favorite. This film has it all -- great action, great performances, innovative cinematography, an intriguing story, romance... Believe me, there is never a dull moment in this samurai classic. Although this was Gosha's first feature film, it is a fully mature work because it was based upon characters developed in a Gosha-directed television series of the same name. The dynamic Tetsuro Tamba stars as Shiba, a ronin who stumbles upon a dispute between a greedy magistrate and the starving farmers he is abusing. Three of the farmers have taken the magistrate's daughter Aya (Miyuki Kuwano) hostage as a bargaining chip as they seek relief from the confiscatory taxation of the magistrate. Shiba first looks on in bemusement at the farmers' fumbling attempts to stand up for themselves, but soon throws in his lot with their righteous cause. As the movie progresses, two more ronin, the scruffy former farmer Sakura (Isamu Nagato) and the elegantly corrupt Kikyo (Mikijiro Hira) side with the farmers, leading to a confrontation between this motley crew and the prefecture's best swordsmen. The film ends with a grim coda that contrasts the heroic behavior of the three ronin with the sheepish, cowardly nature of the people whose interests they sought to defend. As with almost all of Gosha's films, "Three Outlaw Samurai" is filled with plots within plots that drew me into the movie and kept me on the edge of my seat. All three of the lead actors give larger-than-life, memorable performances, as does Miss Kuwano, who transforms from a spoiled child to a noble heroine during the course of the film. My only quibble with this DVD is that there are occasional synchronization problems with the English subtitles; the subtitles sometimes appear a couple beats after the words are spoken, causing the viewer some momentary confusion. Nonetheless, I found this to be one of the most engaging and enjoyable samurai films I've ever seen and I recommend it very, very highly. |
