A gem from the Tora-San series Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
"Tora-San's Shattered Romance", the sixth film in the series, is one of the true classics in the series. The movie has three main stories. First, Tora shows his nobility by helping out a young mother who is fleeing her abusive husband. He gives her money and let's her and her baby stay in his hotel room; when she offers to "pay" for his generosity with her body, Tora recoils and refuses. Instead, he travels with her to her alienated father's home and seeks to patch relations up between father and daughter.

Second, when Tora returns home to Shibamata, he finds that his room has been rented. He is angry, until he sees that the renter is an exceptionally lovely woman, a woman escaping from a bad marriage to a failed writer. Inevitably, Tora falls head over heels in love with her, with the usual consequences.

Third, Hiroshi wants to leave the print shop owned by the Octopus and to start his own business. The Octopus knows that his business is dependent upon Hiroshi's skills for its success. Both Hiroshi and the Octopus turn to Tora to be the middleman, Hiroshi hoping Tora will persuade the Octopus to let him go and the Octopus hoping Tora will persuade Hiroshi to stay. Naturally, chaos and misunderstanding ensue.

Baisho Chieko plays a particularly important role in this film as she deals both with Tora's lovesickness and Hiroshi's ambition. As always, her graceful performance provides the beating heart of the film. Also good in a minor role is the actor who in subsequent films became the second man to play Tora's uncle; in this film, he plays a comic role as a lascivious doctor.

"Tora-San's Shattered Romance" is entertaining and heartwarming from start to finish. It has all the elements for which we love this series. I recommend it very, very highly.
