Why is it that a thing of beauty so often brings sorrow instead of joy?

Otoko is a famed artist and teaches painting to a beautiful younger girl called Keiko. Thy are attracted to each other more than two women should be. Keiko's jealousy and her crazy love for Otoko finally lead to the destruction of Ohki, a married writer and Otoko's secret lover when she was 16... Adapted from the original Kawabata literature, With Beauty and Sorrow is a masterpiece by Director Shinoda Masahiro, one of the most prominent filmmakers of the Japanese New Wave. The film features Kaga Mariko as the envious apprentice and Yamamura So of Tokyo Story (1953) as Ohki.

With pretension and sorrow Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
Shinoda Masahiro seems to have made two different kinds of movies. Some are rooted in Japanese traditions and forms ("Double Suicide", "Gonza the Spearman"). Others self-consciously ape the mood and style of contemporary European art house film fare. The former can be thrilling; the latter tend toward the turgid.

"With Beauty and Sorrow" tells of a famous writer who, when a young man, wronged a beautiful teen-aged girl. Fourteen years later the girl has grown into a skilled artist who takes as a pupil (and lover) an even more beautiful young woman. The gorgeous pupil seeks vengeance against the famous writer; she wants to destroy his family by seducing both him and his son.

This plot may sound like fertile ground for a lustful pot-boiler, but "With Beauty and Sorrow" is anything but passionate. Director Shinoda sucks the life out of the film through his pretentiously arty style, featuring lots of middle-distance shots, long silences, faces cloaked in shadows, and an excruciatingly slow pace. I have seen Ingmar Bergman and, Mr. Shinoda, you are no Ingmar Bergman.

Art house film buffs may appreciate Director Shinoda's technique; ordinary movie fans will be nodding off in their popcorn.
