YesAsia Editorial Description

When you're a poet, life assumes different shades of gray. After debuting with 2002's eclectic Marriage is a Crazy Thing, poet-turned-director Yoo Ha switched his focus to the dark days of his youth during Park Chung Hee's presidency, mainly characterized by violence, violence, and more violence. From such memories, Once Upon a Time in High School starring Kwon Sang Woo was born. A few years down the road, Yoo returned with the gritty gangster actioner A Dirty Carnival.

Byung Doo (Jo In Sung, A Frozen Flower) is a third-rate gangster roaming the streets. He is disrespected by his juniors in the organization and carries the burden of taking care of his ill mother and two brothers. Even his only source of extra money, a rundown arcade room, is stolen by one of his associates under his eyes. But finally luck comes knocking at the door. Mr. Hwang (Cheon Ho Jin, Crying Fist) offers Byung Doo a deal he can't refuse, a deal that could solve all his problems. But nothing's free in this world...

Professional Review of "A Dirty Carnival (Blu-ray) (First Press Limited Edition) (Korea Version)"

    September 18, 2006

This professional review refers to A Dirty Carnival (DVD) (2-Disc) (Korea Version)
Clocking in at two hours and fiften minutes, Yu Ha's A Dirty Carnival is perhaps a little over long, but beyond that it's difficult to find anything negative to say about it. Fans of Yu's previous works, notably Once Upon A Time In High School, are already well aware of the writer-director's gift for creating rich characters and that gift has done nothing but develop and strengthen over the years. Nominally a gangster film but really a lushly realized character drama A Dirty Carnival is blessed with a detailed script, a host of realistic and fully fleshed out characters, and a charismatic and complex lead performance from Jo In-Seong.

Jo stars as Kim Byung-Doo, a charming low-level gangster creeping up on thirty years of age. His youth rapidly fading, Kim has seemingly been on the cusp of making something of himself for years, his natural charisma making him well respected among his peers while a manipulative boss and string of bad luck has kept him firmly locked into his lowly status. When a wealthy industrialist approaches Kim's boss to eliminate a bothersome criminal prosecutor, Kim sees his long awaited chance to advance and takes it. But all advancement comes with a cost.

A Dirty Carnival is really two films in one. The hook that will draw people in is the gangster element, the story of the rise and fall of Kim Byung-Doo through the criminal ranks. But running parallel to this story is the story of Kim's family - his sickly mother, studious sister, and aspiring gangster brother - as well as the relationship triangle between Kim, his childhood friend and would-be film director Min-Ho, and his childhood sweetheart Hyun-Joo. There's no question which of these elements is more important to director Yu - the film begins with the relationship element and devotes the bulk of its running time to it - and the real tragedy of the film begins when Kim's two disparate worlds begin to mingle.

This balancing of elements is strikingly similar to what Yu achieved with Once Upon A Time In High School, his previous film, and it's not hard to see this effort as a logical extension of that film, with this life of crime being a logical end for many of the hardscrabble youth in his earlier film. Again Yu demonstrates an assured hand behind the camera coupled with a strong sense of humanity on the page. A Dirty Carnival has been hailed as one of the finest gangster films to come out of Korea in recent years but that really feels like something of a misnomer. The gang here isn't the point, not at all. The people are. The gang environment simply allows Yu a setting within which to say something about ambition, family, love and betrayal.

The just released Korean DVD set is typically strong. The feature is given an excellent anamorphic transfer, very crisp and clean. The translation of the English subtitles includes the occasional grammar hiccup but is perfectly serviceable. The second disc of features, as usual for a Korean release, has no subtitling whatsoever making it useful only to Korean speakers.

loyalty, friendship, betrayal, gang fights and all the classics you expect from a gangster film is featured in A Dirty Carnival. Now the chance finally arrives to make his fortune, but is he prepared for the consequences it brings. A long time friend's request for Byung Doo to help write a movie about gangsters using his life experience makes him reveals some secrets. A childhood crush reappears in Byung Doo's life making him regret being a gangster for the first time in his life. What will be the outcome with all the sudden situations appearing in his life simultaneously? Will he make it big? Did he share too much information with his long time friend? Will he change for the girl of his dreams? Or will he just end up in the gutter living a typical gangster life?. Come check this out and find out whether Byung Doo will get what he deserves. You also don't want to miss the violence in the brutal fight scenes!

Ha-Yu strikes back.. Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
From the director of Spirit of Jeet-kune Do, he delivers another violence-themed movie which ends up being a raw & bloody masterpiece. From the excellent package, onto the bonuses, the acting, the cast & the music (Alan Parksons Project!), this is a don't-miss for sure. Grab it while you can!

Not bad Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
Although the film is a bit long and tends to drag at times, the overall story about a low-life gangster as he rises above the ranks is always an interesting one. There are a couple sub-plotes involving a woman and an old friend who wants to make a movie to keep things out of the typical Korean gangster flick. They also tried to make it seem more realistic by incorporating sparatic fight scenes. Recommended for fans of the gangster/mob sub-genre.

Poetic no more Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
It's hard to believe this movie is directed by the same director of "Marriage is a Crazy Thing", which is one of my favorite korean movie. I guess for a not-so-special gangster story-line, there is really not much you can do. Even though I wasn't expected much before I watch the film, it is still unexpectedly disappointing.
