Ozu revisits his themes on postwar Japan with a storyline similar to Ozu's own Woman of Tokyo. With her husband away at the frontline of the battlefield, a young mother has to support her family all by herself. In order to save her ailing son, the young mother was forced to prostitute herself for one night. Upon her husband's return from the war, she honestly told him what had happened. However, her husband responds with a shocking and physical savagery that is so atypical of Ozu. Tanaka and Sano ignite these complex and tortures roles with profound humanism.

Powerful Ozu drama

"A Hen in the Wind" must be director Ozu Yasujiro's most gripping and visceral film. In its brief 83 minute running time, the movie packs a real emotional punch. "A Hen in the Wind" tells of Tokiko (Tanaka Kinuyo), a mother struggling to care for her young son and put food on their table while awaiting the repatriation of her husband Shuichi (Sano Shuji) after the war. Shuichi has been away for four long years and now Tokiko is reduced to selling her kimonos in order to provide meager meals. Things turn desperate when Tokiko's son becomes ill and requires a prolonged hospitalization. Tokiko has no money for the hospital bill. Seeing no other choice, she turns to prostitution for one night to raise the necessary funds. Weeks later, Shuichi finally returns home. Under questioning about their son's help, Tokiko admits to what he has done. Shuichi becomes enraged. Will the newly reunited family be blown apart or can Shuichi learn to accept the news? I recommend that you watch this great film to find out. Tanaka Kinuyo, who was so good in Ozu's "Dragnet Girl", is even better here. She plumbs emotional depths that are breathtaking to behold. Also excellent is Sano Shuji as the husband seeking to master his instinctive rage. There is a subtley and nuance to his character that it appears many critics have missed. I understand that Ozu considered this film to be a failure. I strongly disagree! "A Hen in the Wind" is superb. |
