Serving scares, laughs, and love in a nostalgic setting, TVB's 1999 supernatural drama A Loving Spirit is an entertaining and heartwarming series starring top television actors Lawrence Ng and Esther Kwan. Like 2001's Seven Sisters and 2004's Police Station No. 7, A Loving Spirit falls under the nostalgic ghost drama umbrella, revolving around a haunted movie theater in 1960s Hong Kong. Esther Kwan charms as always in one of her signature brassy, yet sensitive roles opposite perennial straight man Lawrence Ng. Character actors Kingdom Yuen King Tan, Angela Tong, Wai Ka Hung, and Chor Yuen also liven up the proceedings with humorous performances.

The early 1960s were tough times for the average working Hong Konger, and Chow Sau Ying (Esther Kwan) has just lost her job. Through the recommendation of her friend (Angela Tong), Sau Ying ends up working as a ticket attendant at Dung Sing Theater, where her work ethic quickly earns the praise and admiration of the theater owner's son, Ching Ho Yin (Lawrence Ng). Sau Ying, however, is less than enthusiastic about Ho Yin's overtures as she already has a boyfriend (Cheng Zi Shing), and is uneasy about the rumors of a ghost in the theater. Sure enough, Sau Ying and Ho Yin soon encounter a female ghost (Kingdom Yuen), who fortunately turns out to be quite harmless, if a bit melodramatic. With the help of the "loving spirit", Ho Yin not only strengthens his relationship with Sau Ying, he also discovers a shocking family secret.

六十年代初香港，生活困難，剛失業的英（關詠荷）得好友淑（湯盈盈）介紹，入了東昇戲院任售票員。
英工作勤奮盡責，深得太子爺然（吳啟華）賞識，欲加提攜。
不料，英因常認為戲院內有鬼，致令然大感不滿。
後英與然輾轉發現女鬼仙（苑瓊丹），始揭發原來然後母梅（韓馬利）和戲院的司理禮（駱應鈞）有姦情，且欲謀奪然家產。
然得英、仙的協助，將梅、禮正法。
時然不經不覺間愛上了英，無奈英的心卻只有其青梅竹馬的男友國（鄭子誠）。
究竟然最終能否感動英？東昇戲院又會否繼續鬧鬼？
