Like the other Huangmei Operas such as The Love Eterne, Ho Meng Hua and Chen Yu Hsien's charming musical, A Maid in Heaven, features female actors in both the male and female roles! In this case, the female-to-male cross-dresser is Ivy Ling Bor, who plays Tong Yong, a mortal man who becomes the object of a goddess' affections. Fong Ying plays the youngest daughter of the Jade Emperor, who falls for Tong Yong and uses her connections as a deity to marry him. Based on a popular Chinese folktale, A Maid in Heaven is a Huangmei Opera told in the sumptuous Shaw Brothers tradition. Romantic interludes, charismatic stars, fabulous sets, beautiful costumes, and above all the charming Mandarin songs make A Maid in Heaven a delightful example of this bygone Hong Kong Cinema genre.

　　It took two directors, three assistant directors, and four cinematographers to capture this remarkable epic about life in the Heavenly Palace. Fang Ying began her career as the title character, who decides that life on Earth would be more rewarding. And given that this was years before Chang Cheh would introduce "Yanggang (macho)" cinema to Hong Kong, the man she falls in love with is played by a woman: Ivy Ling Po -- then also a newcomer.

There were two other versions of this movie but I find this one is the best.

Ivy Ling Po and Fang Yin are delightful to watch. The songs are lovely.

A must for your huangmei diao collection.
