YesAsia Editorial Description

Based on a Korean folk tale, A TALE OF TWO SISTERS is a highly acclaimed horror film from director Ji-woon Kim. The film delicately balances a slow, building atmosphere of dread with sudden horrific shocks through stately, handsome cinematography and a suitably spooky musical score. Soo-mi (Su-jeong Lim) and Soo-yeon (Geun-yeong Mun) are sisters, released after a spell in a mental hospital to return to their father's gothic mansion. Once home, they meet their new stepmother (Jung-ah Yum), who they mistrust and suspect of some vague wrongdoing. Around the same time, perhaps uncoincidentally, a series of strange events begin to occur, apparently the work of a poltergeist. Already struggling with the presence of their new stepmother, the ghostly actions threaten to destabilize the girls' fragile mental states. A TALE OF TWO SISTERS joins RINGU and JU-ON in the cycle of films rejuvenating Asian horror.

"Beautifully shot and disturbingly oblique, TALE has twists, turns, and a moody presence more unnerving than any mere ghost..." - Dalton, Ross (Entertainment Weekly Critic), Entertainment Weekly, 04/15/2005

Dont waste your money Customer Review Rated Bad 2 - 2 out of 10
Boring and not scary at all. Don't waste your money. Rent it at blockbuster instead if you're curious.

BEAUTIFUL AND ENCHANTING Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I watched it yesterday and I'm still under impression. "A Tale of Two Sisters" is very beautiful, accurately-paced, thrilling and magic picture. The plot is rather complicated and I can tell only the beginning: two sisters return to their father and stepmother from a mental home. Everyone is acting rather strange - one of the sisters is very timid and browbeaten, the other one is impudent and brash. Father is self-contained and we can not understand what's on his mind. Stepmom seems way over happy for her stepdaughters' arrival but later we see everything is not exactly as it seems. Soon some strange thing begin to happen in the house...
Movie's events are intricate and it's possible that after watching it you'd want to watch it for the second time to understand all. And even after that I'm not sure you'll have an unambigous explanation.
"A Tale of Two Sisters" is one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen. You can't take your eyes off the screen because it's just gorgeous like a flower. Actually this film reminded me of some splendid porcelain vase which you have to be careful with not to break. It has the accurate choice of colours, every frame is so precise and measured you just hold your breath and watch in admiration. Without any questions I'd call this film a real piece of high art. I think you'll be watching it repeatedly finding hidden meanings and hints. This edition will be a true jewel in your collection.

Thriller Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
A must see suspense thriller movie. You need to really focus on this film otherwise, you'll get lost. The girls are really great especially the girl who acted with Kim Rae Won in ..ing movie.

Indeed, a movie to watch. Just hope the British movie outfit who bought the rights do justice in this movie re-make.

A HORROR MASTERPIECE !!!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This was the first korean horror i had the great pleasure indulging myself in and to date it is the most gripping, frightening, intelligent and interesting horror i've seen. The music is surreal and beautiful, full of suspence, and at times I found myself lost in it. As far as the story goes there is a lot to wrap your mind around but you get ample time to do it in, however i would recommend seeing this movie a few times, once you have you realize that every detail is critical to the overall story and it all adds up wonderfully, which is rare for storylines in most horrors where throwing loads of screaming girls and buckets of blood in seem to be enough for most horror fans, however, as well as being very psychological there are some seriously frightening and deeply suspensful sections which are very realistic and hard to watch, the effects are excellent. I have seen 'Phone', 'ring', 'the grudge', 'Bunshinsaba' and many other great asian horrors, so if you are a fan or a first timer of asian horrors it would be a crime to let this masterpiece pass you by!!!!

I see why people gave low point.. Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This movie can be very confusing but if you understand this movie, it can be the best movie you've ever seen.
I can't actually explain all parts of the movie cuz some people didn't watch it yet.
If you e-mail me or something than I will explain for you. I'm just so sad that people don't like this movie because they don't understand...
