侯孝賢的自傳式電影，故事是關於劇中男主角阿孝咕家庭三年成員的變化，阿孝咕的外省父親原以為在台灣只是過客，卻在此地落地生根，祖母也不斷要求阿孝咕陪她走回大陸老家，然而父親病亡，母親得癌去世，最後祖母在榻榻米去世好幾天都沒人發現。隨著前兩代親人的逐一謝世，懷舊的年代也成為記憶。導演以一種低調、感傷的攝影手法，傳達出鄉愁、絕望以至於成長的生命歷程，透過背景人事物的點描也見證了台灣數十年來政治、經濟社會的變化。
