在這個世界上，總有非我不可的事吧！

蘆原太一(加藤晴彥飾) 是一名全心全意奉獻自己熱情於拳擊運動的21歲青年。但是就在一次意外中變成半身不遂，眼看拳擊手的夢想才正要展翅飛翔，一夕之間卻已破滅。喪失了行動能力的太一，生活只能倚賴輪椅活動。頓時失去生活目標的太一，整天躲在自己的世界裡，封閉了與外界的聯繫。太一內心不奢望任何人的同情，也認為自己並不是完全地殘廢，應該還可以有所作為。

雖然太一曾經失意無助到甚至一度考慮自殺，卻在醫院裡對於姊姊民子(原千晶飾)的一番安慰話語「能夠大難不死，已經是很幸運的事。」，太一卻脫口而出「光是單純活著是沒有意義的！」，這番對話也徹底地點醒了太一全新的人生觀。

事故發生的一年後，太一遇見了一位如風般自由自在生活著的女性早真子(友阪理惠飾)，並逐漸找回以往的開朗樂觀。接著太一接觸了改變他一生的契機－合氣道。

太一在合氣道師父．平石正嗣(石橋凌飾)的指導下，採納了「與其一開始就先拒絕，不如先試著以接納對方的方式出發」的合氣道觀念，也漸漸能夠接受自己下半生與輪椅分不開的命運。對於道場夥伴們對於合氣道武術家的專一執著，太一內心那個停滯不前的齒輪，似乎開始重新轉動了起來…。
