YesAsia Editorial Description

The first color film from Hong Kong's Cathay Studios, Air Hostess hearkens back to the glorious fifties, when the modern world and its burgeoning technology held great promise for everyone. Back then, the position of air hostess (AKA stewardess) held great prestige for the modern woman, and this beloved film portrays that time with tremendous romantic regard. Three women join the air hostess ranks for their own individual reasons. Lovely Ge Lan (AKA: Grace Chang) wishes to escape her privileged lifestyle, pal Su Feng wants to join up with her friend, and Julie Yeh seeks the glamour of a life of international travel. Together, the three friends struggle for their future in the skies. Gorgeous color photography accentuates the costumes and locations of the time, which include stops in Taipei, Singapre, and Bangkok. Also starring veteran actor Qiao Hong (Roy Chiao), Air Hostess evokes its unique era with loving grace, and is a fine way to get acquainted with the wonderful films of the Cathay Studios!

Back in 1959, air hostess was considered one of the most glamorous and privileged occupations for young girls with a dream. This first colour production of MP & GI details the ins and outs of the profession and takes the three lead actresses, Ge Lan (Grace Chang) , Julia Ye Feng and Dolly Su Feng through a series of tough training. After their graduation, the film then brings them, and the audience, to exotic places like Bangkok, Singapore and Taiwan. The colourful photography, several musical numbers and the comedic tone of the film provide lots of viewing pleasures even forty years after the film had been made.

I'd love to fly with Grace! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Air Hostess" is a relic; it's a bit stodgy, but it still entertains. Grace Chang stars as a young woman whose mother is eager to marry her off to an eager young suitor, but Ge Lan has other ideas. She dreams of seeing the world as an airline stewardess. We follow her as she endures the selection process (filling out an application, taking a written test, taking a physical test, being interviewed), then we see her go through the training needed to grasp the job she covets. Finally (and I do mean 'finally' -- all of those preliminaries take will over half an hour and don't exactly keep you on the edge of your seat), the big day arrives and Ge Lan takes to the skies.

At this point, the film becomes quite colorful and engaging. Ge Lan's travels take us to Singapore, Bangkok, and Taipei and, through her eyes, we are able to enjoy some beautiful, long-lost scenery. She endures some backbiting by a rival stewardess (Julie Yeh) who envies Ge Lan's popularity. And she starts a budding romance with a hunky pilot (Roy Chiao), who baffles Ge Lan with his occasionally harsh behavior toward her. Through it all, Ge Lan grows from a girl with a dream into a woman with a profession.

Grace Chang, as usual, casts her irresistible charm over the viewer; she looks lovely and sings four delightfully catchy tunes. Julie Yeh is simply drop-dead gorgeous here and dies a nice job with her catty character. Stick with "Air Hostess" through those slowly paced opening scenes and enjoy these very friendly skies. (Keep your eyes peeled for a cute cameo by Lin Cui.)

Good old tourist attractions Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I bought this movie because it featured some of the tourist attractions in Singapore, Hongkong, Taipei and Bangkok that had long disappeared. Grace Chang, of course, was an all-rounder which made this movie so interesting to watch. And Yeh Feng, she's so tall and slim and pretty and ... everything!

Collector's item, if you ask me.

Song HITS galore in DELIGHTFUL ,DELECTABLE, DELICI Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
How many Chinese movies have you seen that explore the
new found professional career world of women in post-war Hongkong ? "Air Hostess" was one of the most innovative film that came out of post war HK, not only did it use color and multi-foreign locations as background, it also dwelve into the lifestyle changing
world of well educated women who dare to challenge the
traditional role of women in Chinese society. Ge Lan,
the pride and treasure of Cathay studio had delivered
another enjoyable performance to her fans after the
big box office hit of "Mambo Girl", this time you can see her song and dance numbers in FULL COLOR, paving
her way to another more fully realized work in the later "WILD WILD ROSE". Fans of Ge Lan should be grateful to Panorama for releasing all these gems from
the Cathay vaults, now we are ready for more !!!!!
How about "June Bride" soon ??
