Ultimate slice-of-life movie
|
All About Lily Chou-Chou went on the first position of my top 10 soon after the first view, let me tell you why: AALCC is a movie absolutely like nothing else, it's a story that can be perfectly reflected on some of our lives, our youth. Who has never felt alone and lost in his teen years? Who has never searched for shelter and hope in a particularly music band? Maybe by being influenced by some friends. Well Shunji Iwai know well this, and he struggled well to create an absolute idol, an hope for his young boys: that's Lily Chou-Chou. This girl with an unbelievable voice is truly the protagonist of this movie, her music surround every single frame, affecting every single action made by the young guys, she's like a goddess that watches her disciples. The directing is, as you can expect from Iwai, magnificent: in particular the handy cam work is simply fantastic, you can feel almost to touch the guy's hearts and feel also accomplice for their suffering. Maybe this is not a movie, maybe it's only a 140 minutes PV, but even is it, I don't care: when you'll hear Lily, you'll never forget her. |

Coming of Age in Hell
| The story is bleak. A group of teenagers caught in a vicious cycle of bullying. The only way out was a tragic end. I felt that the pace and mood of the story could be better controlled and tightened. Instead, it was sporadic and uneven, with a mish mash of hi-tech instant messaging, teenage drama and social documentary. I didn't enjoy it as much. |

Stunning, disturbing, beautiful
| Excellent movie that kept me thinking a lot throughout watching it, and after it was over. I've never seen any other movie such as this before, and it's like having a breath of fresh air! Over 2 hours of art potrayed by Shunji Iwai, with a mesmerising soundtrack to boot. This film is full of the ether... |

The way a film should be.
| This film definately moves its audience; compelling, disturbing, but beautifully crafted. The ugliness of violence, the ordinary/mundane... just presented so well yet simply, that it gives the movie an understated elegance as a work of art. |

Different but it s really good..
| Watching this movie the first time was a bit confusing for me. The way the movie is made is one in which I am not accustomed to. Although because its so different I am really drawn into it, and have a good sense of satisfaction when the movie is over. It shows a lot of the social problems of the young but also how shows that even with the problems one can find some good. |

Mentally and Emotionally Compelling
| I watched this movie in my college movie theatre a year back and this movie made a major impact on views on childhood and society. To feel the full effects of this movie, it must have your full attention. As to watching it over again, I believe a movie one forms an emotional attachment with should not be viewed again. (At least, for a year or so) It seems to ruin the magic of a good movie. If you haven't seen this movie, you're missing out on one of the best directed movies out today. |

*sigh*
|
When i saw this film i was upset and angry at the way the youth in this film have to deal with what happens. Often i kept finding myself saying outloud what i wanted the characters to do. i found it painfull to watch, but not cause of anything other than the way the characters develop and deal with problems... I felt sick watching it, but i'm glad i did, its my favorite film of all time and it just wants me to do better in my life and help who ever i can.... 10 stars! |

Amazing and Innovative
| I find this movie to be one of the most innovative and profound movies in recent years. The seemingly random images and brutally painful scenes come together to make a statement about the problems some Japanese teens face. Even though this is fiction and perhaps somewhat overstated, it gives a sense of simpathy and understanding to teens facing this kind of thing. It also acts as a wake up call to parents and other adults who are unaware. Also the involvement of real web postings, j-pop commentary, and the internet novel that came before the movie add even more layers to this film. Not to mention the beautiful cinematography. |
