森林火災消火隊のパイロットであるピートの仕事は危険が多く、管制塔で働く恋人・ドリンダは心配で仕方ない。そんな彼女の助言で、飛行士養成学校への転勤を決めたピート。ところがある日、彼は山火事の消火作業中に友人を救おうとして命を落とし、帰らぬ人となってしまう。幽霊となって再びドリンダのもとへ戻って来たピートは、生きている間に言えなかった「愛している」という一言を彼女に伝えようとするが…。
巨匠、スピルバーグ監督が贈る愛のファンタジー。リチャード・ドレイファス、ホリー・ハンターという名優2人が切ない恋人達の姿を熱演し、涙無くしては見られない感動作に仕上がっている。また、天使役でオードリー・ヘップバーンが出演して話題を呼んだが、これが彼女の遺作となってしまった。
