　　高志堅跟候心明、李湘梅夫婦為莫逆之交，同往上海租界。志堅教書為業，心明參與地下抗戰工作，湘梅則是音樂學校的高材生。太平洋戰事爆發，日軍進佔租界，心明毅然離開妻子及失明的鄉親，進入內陸抗戰。志堅見好友久無音訊，慷慨以自己的工資接濟湘梅與後母。惟湘梅不願長期加重志堅的負擔，在好友柳青的介紹下到舞場當歌女。志堅得悉後，勃然大怒，以為她甘心侍奉權貴。此時，志堅因與友合辦濘交，向學生灌輸抗敵思想而被拘捕。幸得湘梅與柳青疏通憲兵，才能獲釋。志堅自此亦明白湘梅當上歌女的苦衷，二人之間更萌生愛意。抗戰勝利後，心明斷臂而歸，為勝利付出了沉重代價。志堅眼見好友平安歸來，不欲破壞大好家庭，遂悄然而去。
