Creepy psychological tale Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Angel Dust" is an arty, creepy thriller about a string of murders in which young women in public places are killed by poisonous injections. Director Ishii Sogo employs clever cinematography and creative film and sound editing to suggest a world in which reality and our perceptions of reality are never quite what they seem. Minami Kaho stars as police detective Suma Setsuko, who employs her clinical training to develop a psychological profile of criminals. On this case, however, Suma may have encountered more than she can handle, as all roads seem to lead to Dr. Aku Rei (Wakamatsu Takeshi), a psychiatrist with whom she trained and whom she loved, who continues to have a strange hold over Suma.

I encountered two problems with this film. The first pertains to how Director Ishii has structured the story. Interspersed throughout the film is footage of Dr. Aku's psychological treatment (or, perhaps, manipulation) of patients; he seeks to reverse-brainwash people who had become members of a religious cult. These sequences, while adding to the overall air of dread, can run on too long, interrupting the story's momentum. Second, this Panorama DVD release is very grainy. Since Ishii shot the film in a manner intended to give it a gritty feel, the grainy DVD transfer is a problem. It's a bit like watching the movie through a grimy lens.

Nonetheless, the film's inherently suspenseful tale, its solid performances, and its stylish approach to storytelling make this a film well worth viewing. The porcelain-skinned beauty Minami Kaho makes a very strong impression as the tortured profiler. And the film's ineffable closing shot, focussing on Dr. Aku's smirking face, provides a perfectly chilling coda upon which to end. Fans of arthouse cinema should embrace "Angel Dust".
