YesAsia Editorial Description

One of the undisputed masters of Japan cinema, Shimizu Hiroshi (1903-1966) made well over 100 films in his career, ranging from children's films to lighthearted comedies to stories from the fringe. His outstanding cinematic achievements match that of contemporary great and lifelong friend Ozu Yasujiro, though the latter has eclipsed him in recognition. Shimizu is particularly well known for his children's films, such as Children of the Wind (1937), but his steady stream of output for Shochiku from the 1920s to 1950s yielded a far wider selection of films, many of which have been sadly lost to time. In comparison to Ozu's films which are readily available, Shimizu's works have been near impossible to find outside of the festival circuit, but Shochiku is now finally releasing Shimizu's films on DVD.

Shimizu's 1938 feature Anma to Onna (a.k.a. The Masseurs and a Woman) revolves around a pair of traveling blind masseurs who stop at an inn. One of the masseurs, Tokuichi (Saburi Shin), takes an interest in a woman (Takamine Meiko) from Tokyo who seems be hiding a mysterious past. The film peeks in and out of the lives and stories of the characters in unexpected ways that defy narrative conventions.

An utterly original vision Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
In "Anma to Onna" (a.k.a. "The Masseurs and the Woman"), as in his earlier film "Mr. Thank You", director Shimizu Hiroshi reveals a truly distinctive cinematic voice. He does not tell a story so much as he suggests stories.

The film takes place in a hot spring resort town and revolves around a blind masseur, a young woman from Tokyo who comes to the resort alone, and a young man who travels to resort with his little nephew. The masseur has a crush on a pretty hotel maid, but also develops feelings for the Tokyo woman. The young man also is interested in the Tokyo woman and keeps extending his stay at the resort to spend more time with her. Someone is stealing the money from the other guests in the resort town. Might it be the young man? The young woman?

Shimizu teases an amazingly intriguing film out of these slender threads of intersecting lives. The film is pregnant with an almost dreamlike quality, as we wonder about what lies behind the mysterious veneers of these characters and watch the blind masseurs feel their way around the town. "Anma to Onna" also features strikingly original cinematography loaded with vivid images. I recommend this film very, very highly.
