YesAsia Editorial Description
An all-star cast is assembled for Ashes of Time, an existential swordplay epic from acclaimed director Wong Kar Wai! Leslie Cheung, Brigitte Lin, Tony Leung Ka Fai, Jacky Cheung, Carina Lau, Charlie Yeung, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, and Maggie Cheung all appear, as Wong Kar Wai takes standard wuxia characters and gives them resonant emotional life. Fierce action, striking images and a haunting soundtrack all combine to glorious cinema effect in Ashes of Time, an award-winning film that combines artistic aspirations with a beloved commercial film genre.
Based on the work of famed wuxia novelist Jin Yong (AKA Louis Cha), Ashes of Time is at once a tribute to and departure from the author's classic works. Director Wong Kar Wai takes the standard wuxia plotline of swordsmen locked in eternal battle, and infuses it with his pet themes of love and loss. The result is an existential swordplay film, and a humanizing look at legendary heroes that's both compelling and fascinating in its rich detail and utter emotional familiarity. The actors bring uniform presence to their roles, Sammo Hung's action direction is energetic and powerful, and Christopher Doyle's cinematography is a thing of beauty. Uncommon, unusual, but undeniably enchanting, Ashes of Time is a modern cinema classic.

Fuzzy quality equals artsy?
Fuzzy quality equals artsy?
| Okay, so the story doesn't make sense unless you were actually one of the characters but I guess that's everyone else's life outside of your own. The film quality itself remains fuzzy & of course a white costume or background doesn't do wonders for subtitles also in white. I guess I need to re-visit this film to see if my perception on life has changed; then again, I admit I never had an eye for what makes an artsy film. |

Quentin! Remaster this Classic!
| If there ever was a film that needed some remastering and care, it is this one. Although this MeiAh version, is not as horrid as the World Film version, it has its big share of faults. The film is very grainy, the sound is shrill, and both chinese and english subtitles appear on screen together, (the chinese subs above the english subs), and there is nothing you can do about it. This is one of the so-called first 'art-films', and I think it is worth remastering. Tarantino brought over a very nice transfer of 'Chungking Express', on his 'Rolling Thunder Presents' video company label. Let us hope he, or someone else, will remaster this great classic, so we can marvel at it, without all these distractions. 8 stars for the film. 4 stars for this version. |

Forget the plot!
Forget the plot!

As with all Wong Kar Wai movies audiences MUST ignore what perceptions of plot or what expectations of plot that they see or have. The plot does not matter because Wong Kar Wai is telling a story not making a point. He shows you the journey of the characters and he does not really tell you what happens before or after. He makes you live in the moment, that is how he makes his films, momentary, spontaneous, natural, unrehearsed. The brilliance of this film come from the never-before-seen performances and epic characterization from the all star cast of Leslie Cheung, Brigitte Lin, Tony Leung Ka Fai, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Carina Lau, Maggie Cheung, Jacky Cheung. Their performances are each very short but they each tell their own character's story so well with such persence and charisma that the film itself, although disjointed just seems epic and unforgettable. They key is to appreciate the movie for each of its stories and performances of each character and not the movie as a whole. This movie tells multiple stories that revolve around Leslie CHeungs character, but Do not try to look at the whole picture, it is not supposed to be a perfect story with your run of the mill plot and lessons learned and perfect happy ending! PS: do not buy the DVD version, it is absolutely horrible to look at! It has picture quailty like if not worse than VCD quaility, and they sound is often dubbed and the movie is distant and fuzzy. The worse part of this DVD is that it has a uncloseable subtitle section that takes up about 20% of the screen that actually blocks out the movie because the movie is not presented in Widescreeen. THe DVD also has no special features, only 2 trailers. You would be better off with the VCD version since you can actually see the whole picture on the VCD version. |

I needed to watch the movie at least 3 times to fully understand the plot. You must listen/watch for details. If you miss something, you will not get the plot in the end. Everytime I watch this movie, I get so addicted. I love how the actors portray the characters and make you feel their emotions. Especially Brigitte Lin and Maggie Cheung. Brigitte's quote of "If I can't help but ask you if you love me, you must tell me I am the one you love the most" always makes me cry. Maggie's second last scene where she cries because she regrets fighting over the word "I love you" was very touching too. Bravo! To those who want a hint as to what the movie is about... It's a love story and its turmoil/conflicts (ie what the character really wants vs what they think they should do instead). Thus, the scene of the raging water in the beginning of the film. The main story revolves around Au Yeung Feng (Lesile) and his sister in law (Maggie). All the other characters are used to support/remind/tell/contrast with Lesile's character or the love story. Look and watch for symbols that connect (ie. the Cherry Blossom references, the weather and horoscopes). Anyways, I hope this will shed some light to the main plot of the story for those who are confused. And this is not a typical movie that tells you everything you need to know. You must interrupt the other character's actions and link back to Lesile and Maggie's love story! It's definitely worth watching more than once. Especially, the music. I love the background music! |
