幼くして旧家である大和家の養子になった輝雄は、8年間の欧州留学を終え、恋人・ゲルダを連れて帰国する。そんな2人を出迎えた輝雄の義妹・光子の心境は複雑だった。それは、輝雄が大和家に来たときから光子との結婚が決まっていたからである。古い因習を非難するゲルダ、西欧文化と日本的な心の矛盾に悩む輝雄。そんな矢先、光子が花嫁衣装を手に、火山に身を投げようとする…。
"永遠の処女"原節子と"国際スター"早川雪洲が共演し、山岳映画の巨匠アーノルド・ファンクと伊丹万作（伊丹十三の父親）が共同監督として名を連ねた、まさに幻の名作と言える日独合作映画。ロケハンで来日中のアーノルド・ファンクが、当時17歳の原節子に一目惚れしてヒロインに大抜擢したと言われている。日本側のスタッフとして撮影協力に円谷英二、音楽に山田耕作も名を連ねている。今では見られなくなった日本の原風景が全編に渡って広がっており、古き時代の美しさに心洗われ、郷愁を誘われる作品である。日本公開時は伊丹万作監督版が上映されたが、本ディスクはアーノルド・ファンク監督による日本未公開のドイツ版を収録している。
