Shaw Brothers studios tackles the at-the-time controversial topic of single motherhood in the 1967 melodrama Auntie Lan. Fong Ying stars as Wen Lan, a recent college graduate who's due to marry her classmate He You Wi (Jimmy Wang Yu in a rare non-martial arts role). But He You Wi dies in a plane crash before the wedding, leaving Wen Lan both distraught AND pregnant with his unborn child. In a time when single motherhood was socially unacceptable, Wen Lan is faced with an uncertain and possibly marked future. Should she give up the child, and if she does will she ever forgive herself for the act? A dramatic and emotionally charged morality play, Auntie Lan is director Yueh Feng's complex and sensitive look at a conflict encompassing culture, gender, and generational difference. With difficult emotion and a heart-rending central performance from Fong Ying, Auntie Lan is an undeniably affecting drama told in the classic Shaw Brothers studio style.
