I love the music on this CD. Wonderful and almost all songs fits the new music just perfect. The front cover is pretty and this is the best Acoustic album so far. The others are also good but this one is the best. High quality sound and wonderful music that you can listen to over and over again. This is also the longest of all Acoustic albums. Support Ayu by buying this amazing album now and enjoy. |

Acoustic Orchestra 4
Acoustic Orchestra 4
| I love it. The 4th :Non-Stop Mega Mix" was a disappointment but the acoustic orchestra is as great as ever! With the "I am..." album songs being the remix material You can't get bad tracks! It's great! You'll love it! |

A superior re-interpreation of the originals.
A superior re-interpreation of the originals.
| I will establish a little pretext to this review/essay by giving some background and bias. I have been a devout fan of Hamasaki Ayumis music since her debut, mostly because I feel a strong emotional resonance with the songs, both musically and lyrically. However, I am probably in the minority of her fans as a whole, in the sense that Im almost always more interested in the remixes than the original. This is especially true in the case of her most recent album I am?. Musically speaking, I find the album bland compared to her previous songs. Overall, I prefer the songs with music written by Kazuhito Kikuchi and Yasuhiko Hoshino. While she herself has some undeniable songwriting credibility (my favorite song of all time is M?, perhaps its time that she lets the professional songwriters get involved once again for varietys sake. But I digress. So yes, I find the album I am? to be musically bland, and so for me it really came down to the remixes to make the songs more interesting. But unfortunately, her recent maxi-singles have been filled with less-than-stellar remixes. Some of the staple remixers (e.g. Seiki Sato aka nicely nice, Laugh & Peace) Im not sure why theyre employed all the time; their remixes seem rather crappy to me. Some remixers who have turned out excellent work before (e.g. Izumi D.M.X?Miyazaki, 83 key) have also recently faltered. But regardless, I harbor hope and have always greatly anticipated the ayu-mi-x releases, including this one. It is alarming and disappointing that the sales of ayu-mi-x 4 have been quite dismal compared to the previous ones. I hope that Avex will not stop with the ayu-mi-x franchise. Version Acoustic Orchestra is always artistically interesting. I will comment only on the songs from I am?. Overall, the arrangements on this one are varied, yet consistently good. The album begins with a relatively grand scale interpretation of I am?. It is a creative take on the music but Im not sure if the music correlates well to the main lyrical melody line. I suppose they wanted to establish the fake Japanese?theme with the use of Japanese traditional instruments, but the overall effect is at times confused and cacophonous, perhaps due to the counter-melody of the piano. NEVER EVER,?on the other hand, received a creative reinterpretation that is cohesive. The music removed a sort of happy-core?note that existed in the original, and transformed it into a slightly eerie atmospheric that works considering the lyrics. Endless sorrow?received a safe but boring guitar treatment that doesnt sound too different from the guitar on the gone with the wind?version. Daybreak?employs a harpsichord that is somehow appropriately backing a string quartet to pleasant effect. M?is stunningly beautiful and alone justified the purchase. The song was already heart wrenching; the Version Acoustic Orchestra successfully extracted the essence of the music and emoted it. The music has excellent dramatic structure and progression. The sprite of violin in the chorus is a minor annoyance, however. Otherwise, I would say this version is perfect. The song still alone?seems underappreciated; it is one of my favorites from the album, and it is executed here with great urgency fitting to the mood of the song. It is right behind M?in musical quality. No more words?and Dearest?are both fine; since I dont really like their original versions, and the review has to be under 4000 characters, I wont comment on those two. Lastly, one minor disappointment I had with this otherwise superior album is that I was under the impression that the songs from prior albums included in this one (e.g. Fly high,?SEASONS? would have new arrangements. I suppose its fine that ayu-mi-x 4 functions as a greatest hits collection, but in my opinion the mediocre old Versions Acoustic Orchestra were included at the expense of better ones (e.g. that of appears,?Duty,?Far away?. |
