Professional Review of "Back Up"

June 18, 2008

This professional review refers to Back Up (SACD Version)

Credits well deserved: Back Up ~ Andy Hui

Here comes the end of a year as every singer works particularly hard on promotion. Most singers are going to give it one last try of this year for a signature album so as to boost up their popularity and at the same, in search for a big hit which will definitely increase their chances of winning awards. Andy Hui, the Most Popular Male Singer in recent yearas, is of no exception. Back Up, his latest Cantonese album, comes with eleven brand new songs.

Back Up is a milestone album for Andy. Back Up is less glitzy and commercial but its scope of songs is widened and not only limted to ballads such as Mud and etc. It has been the best album from Andy in recent years.

Instead of those canned, catchy, karaoke-bound ballads, a rock piece with attitude is selected as the first principal tune in the album. Speak With God (Track#2), the leading track, marks a bold breakthrough in Andy's long and glorious music career.

Featuring Deanie Ip, The Fly In The Ointment (Track#6) is the latest duet by Andy and the lady singer. The new duet is as good as Tell Me How Not To Love Him some years ago though Deanie's forceful performance does overshadow the Canto-pop king to a certain extent.

Saturday Night (Track#9), produced by the renowned local rock musician Paul Wong, is a typical trademark song of Paul's with quality lyrics and music. In My Son (Track#12), the singer's pleasingly natural style is the greatest selling point.

As for the rests, Learn To Walk (Track#8), the other leading track, and The Day After Tomorrow (Track#14) are good too. However, the relatively ordinary Wakeful Sleep (Track#4) is downed when compared to other pieces in the album.

Recommendations: The Fly In The Ointment (Track#6), Saturday Night (Track#9), The Day After Tomorrow (Track#14) and My Son (Track#12)

Decent Album.. but... Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
I can't stand song #6. The 2 voices just clash so bad. Everytime I listen I have to skip that song. Yip's voice is too dominating and Andy's voice too melo. I don't know if they do this for effect or what... but there is no harmany and end up being just noisy.

Other than that, other songs are not bad. Nothing really stands out, so I really can't say this is Andy's best album. But the overall album is worth a listen.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
ALL the songs in this album has it's unique rhythm. I especially loved "Speak with God" (Track 2) and Tracks 8, 10, and 12 ("My Son"). The lyrics are meaningful (especially for Track 12 "My Son"...words can't explain the good-feeling this album brings.

Waited for more than a year, Andy finally released his new cd "back up"~!! After I listened to this cd, I think this year was worth for waiting.....all of the songs are good, and they are not typical K songs anymore~!! it's good to see andy made the change, not many singers are brave enough to make a such big change~ I really think this album is one the best of 2004, everyone, go and buy it la~!!
