| Baek Ji Young's "Special Best" came as a disappointment to me. I got to know Miss Baek's music from her "Smile" and "Smile Again" albums. Those albums contain a wonderful mix of dance, Latin, and ballad tracks, with the emphasis on Miss Baek's velvety vocals. "Special Best" has 34 tracks from the early years of Miss Baek's career. Two of the songs essentially are instrumentals and six are remixes of songs contained elsewhere on the album. The overwhelming majority of the songs are dance tracks. I find the way these songs were recorded to be very strange. Miss Baek's vocals typically are buried somewhere in the middle of the mix, with the rhythm tracks brought very much to the foreground of the music. Miss Baek seems to be reduced to shouting to be heard over the din. This may make sense for dance club play, but these jackhammer beats become a bit overwhelming when this album is played on a car or home stereo. The few ballads on the album are subpar compared to Miss Baek's later work. Fans of this great singer will want to own this album, but if you are new to Miss Baek I strongly recommend that you start with either her "Smile" or "Smile Again" albums. |
