十八年後，爵子常明為強搶歌女白梨影，打死其父，徐天寶救回梨影，為怕常明尋仇，將之暗藏民家，日久生情，遂訂終身之約。
皇帝將天寶招為附馬，天寶戀梨影而疏公主，公主發現，要將梨影置於死地，天寶為解救梨影而打了公主。
皇帝起初以為少年夫妻一時爭執，不予深究，後經常明指出是因為梨影之故，又查出梨影實係中山王親生女，天寶實為野種，遂生出天大風波。皇帝以欺君之罪貶徐棟一家，定天寶斬刑，監斬官正是常明。
刑場上，白梨影與徐天寶相約，午時鼓響，天寶在刑場過刀，梨影在家中上吊，同到黃泉再做夫妻。
正準備行刑，公主持聖旨趕到，赦去天寶之罪名，仍為附馬，大鼓一響，梨影卻在家中上吊。
天地蒼蒼，山野茫茫，天寶抱著梨影，一步步走向蒼茫深處。
