幼稚園からの幼なじみである1979年生まれの4人で結成されたロック・バンド、BUMP OF CHICKEN。インディーズ時代にリリースした2枚のアルバムが絶賛され、2000年9月にシングル「ダイヤモンド」でメジャー・デビュー。2001年3月にリリースしたシングル「天体観測」がロング・セールスを記録し、メジャー2作目にしてブレイクを果たした。ノスタルジーの奥に深い洞察力を窺わせる歌詞、乾いた空気の向こう側に温もりを感じさせる瑞々しいメロディーと力強いサウンド、バンド全体から匂い立つヒリヒリするような色香など、ひと握りのロック・バンドにしか持ち得ない魅力で老若男女を問わず聴く者を虜にしている。
