1952年秋，北韓戰爭進入最後的關鍵階段。美國侵略者竟在板門店談判休會期間，調動六萬多兵力，在三八線附近發動了大規模進攻，企圖奪取上甘嶺陣地，進而攻佔五聖山，用武力獲得他們在談判桌上得不到的東西。堅守上某嶺陣地的中國人民志願軍某部八連，在連長張忠發的率領下，與敵人浴血奮戰，打退了敵人二十多次的瘋狂進攻。此後，他們又根據上級指示，退入坑道堅守陣地，拖住敵人，使之無法前進一步。在坑道裡，他們遇到了各種難以想像的困難。不僅與外界的聯繫被敵人切斷，而且缺水缺糧，生存艱難。但為了祖國、為了北韓人民，他們以驚人的毅力，堅守了二十四天，從而贏得了時間，使中朝軍隊取得了大進攻的勝利，並使整個北韓戰場的形勢發生了根本變化。美國侵略者被皖重新坐下來談判，無可奈何地在停戰協定上簽了字。北韓人民得到了和平。
