YesAsia Editorial Description

Late director Fukasaku Kinji's 2000 international cult hit Battle Royale is one of the most shocking and controversial films of recent years. Based on a Takami Koushun novel, the violent and visceral film takes a Lord of the Flies scenario to modern Japan, telling a tragically brutal and gut-wrenching story amidst the thrilling carnage and bloodshed. Battle Royale pits a group of students against each other in a deadly game of survival; taken to a remote island, the teenagers are each given one weapon and a deadline - kill each other or be killed.

Fukasaku Kenta stepped into his late father's shoes to direct this 2003 sequel, Battle Royale II. After the disastrous events of the first film, the stakes have been upped with Fujiwara Tatsuya and Maeda Aki, reprising their roles, leading a terrorist revolution against the government. Changing the rules of the BR game, the government send in another group of high school students to take down the youth insurgents. The cast includes Maeda Ai (Who's Camus Anyway), Takeuchi Riki (Babel), and the legendary Sonny Chiba.

Battle Royale 2 - Revenge is an extended version of the original film with over 20 minutes of additional footage.

Professional Review of "Battle Royale II - Revenge (DVD) (Limited Edition) (Japan Version)"

March 10, 2008

This professional review refers to Battle Royale II (DTS Version) (Hong Kong Version)
Why do people keep on killing each other? It probably is because, "being alive" itself is a lump of an egoism. The moment when one starts to cling to life is also the very moment when each ego starts to sever their relations with others, which equals the fall to an endless death. The previous Battle Royale revolved around the universal theme of the Karma that drives people to go on living. The sequel presents a junior-high-school student as hero but has been criticized for its cruel killing scenes. However, the message and the nature of the theme, which lie in the root of it are much purer than that of the previous part.

While the previous Battle Royale followed the meaning of each death from the psychological side, Battle Royale II: Requiem has totally improved its scale in every element. The story development in the introduction, in which the students are locked up and urged to make decisions is very breath-taking as the battle scenes are even more dynamical than the ones shown before. The theme has also been changed from "By what means can people cling to life?" to "What are people living for?". Well, you can find the answer in the final scene.

Because of the sudden death of director Fukasaku Kinji, the production team had to start filming without the final script, therefore some embarrassments as well as unbalanced parts can be seen here and there. The first part described the meaning of each life and death in detail while its sequel, although it refers to a fellowship, an opposition to adult society and then to world peace, offers a quite contrary effect. It gives you the impression that people just die one after another without describing the meaning of each life and death.

Takeuchi Riki played his role quite well just as Kitano Takeshi, who acted weirdly as a teacher in the previous chapter. However, the final scene was like out of a cheap youth drama. The highlight is the performance of Fujiwara Tatsuya who appears as the hero Nanahara. Other young actors might not have fared as well as he. His good performance also charged the whole movie with a lasting feeling of suspense.

The hero says, "To live earnestly is much more difficult than to die." There should be a particular reason why people live and are allowed to live in the society, while each and every person's life also is very meaningful." Battle Royale II: Requiem follows the superb legacy of its predecessor and, at the same time, attracts us with both violent and delicate descriptions that cause us to look forward to seeing Fukasaku Kenta's future work.

Foretelling Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Very, very good movie. Some of the reviewers are missing how predictive this movie is, and at the same time, very entertaining. In this era, this movie reads as an uncanny prediction for the current state of affairs in the world. Think about it. A government seeking economic gain and wanting to take the minds of the electorate off its own mismanagement creates a villian (teenagers/Saddam; ironically both "creations" of the government), makes them a scapegoat (teen angst/WMDs), thinks it can break their spirit, and not only do things go horribly wrong, but they create something for the government to really be scared of (Wild 7/fundementalist Iraq and a nuclear Korea/Iran). Interesting how one reviewer finds it unbelievable that the Japanese government would tolerate the US bombing their territory without their permission. Did he miss the part where the teacher lists 60 countries that we bombed with no permission? Beyond that, the casting is very good, perhaps a bit melodramatic at times, but I think Lars would forgive him. Highly recommended.

Terrible sequel Customer Review Rated Bad 1 - 1 out of 10
I really looked forward to this movie but it was a huge disappointment. It starts out strong, with a new set of kids being forced to attack a terroristic island stronghold. As soon as they explore why the terrorists are attacking, the whole thing falls apart. The hero of the 1st movie is now a terrorist fighting.... all adults! Yeah, that makes sense. America is portrayed as randomly bombing the terrorists, without permission of the Japanese government. The ending and most everything else is utterly nonsensical. Trust me, avoid it.

Awesome Movie Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I thought this was an excellent movie. Of course there were some flaws in the movie such as how nanahara shuya gets shot so many times and still manages to live. As expected, I thought this movie was definately worth watching after seeing the first. I don't think that the movie should have stated an all out war on adults, because the mere fact that, if they survive, they become the adults. Moreover, I think they should have made a declaration of war against the government that brought on the BR Act or law. I had to watch this movie 3 times, to really get an idea of what the movie was trying to portray. But for all you haters out there that think that this movie bashes the americans, well thats your problem; everyone has different opinions. Anyways, see the movie for yourself. Speculations on the reviews on whether to watch the movie or not is not a good thing. Just because someone says the movie was bad or not that great, doesn't mean that it is. You have to decide for yourself.

Dissapointing. Customer Review Rated Bad 1 - 1 out of 10
I saw this movie in the cinema, and this is all I've got: With a terribly under-developed plotline and characters that were killed off before I could even begin to care about them, I found Battle Royale II a big dissapointment. It came to the point where I wished for the movie to end so I could get up and leave. The first movie, although it had it's flaws, was a MUCH better movie than this. I'm not saying you'll feel the same as I. I mean, go ahead, watch it, but don't expect too much from it.
