Between Tears And Smiles (Hong Kong Version) VCD
YesAsia Editorial Description
The first potential Mrs. Fan is the ridiculously spoiled daughter from a rich family (played by Li Li Hua, from The Goddess of Mercy and The Fate of Lee Khan). Chia Soo is more interested in the second girl, however, as his heart is captured by the siren song of Shen Feng Hsien (also played by Li Li Hua), a soft-spoken, poverty-stricken singer performing in a seedy nightclub. The third woman in this "love rectangle" is played by Ivy Ling Bor, a street performer acrobat who works with her father. Although Chia Soo has his heart set on Feng Hsien, it turns out that he's got some stiff competition. Zeng Miu (from The Mermaid and Brotherhood) plays General Chang, who has his henchmen abduct they sexy singer for his own personal plaything.
With all these obstacles, will Chia Soo get the girl? And what happens when he gets help from an unexpected source? After the film's release, star Li Li Hua took home Best Actress prize while Zeng Miu took home an award for Best Supporting Actor at the 3rd Golden Horse Awards. With cameo appearances by various Shaw stars and its timeless tale of tragic love, Between Tears and Smiles is one classic film sure to win fans, both young and old!

"Between Tears and Smiles" is the prototypical Shaw Brothers melodrama. Li Lihua plays a young woman forced by circumstances to forego her education in order to earn money as a singer. Kwan Shan is a wealthy young student who strays into the inn at which Miss Li is singing and promptly falls head over heels in love with her. He provides financial support to her family so that she may return to school. Kwan Shan also befriends a middle-aged man and his daughter (Ivy Ling Bo) who scrape together a meager existence by putting on displays of martial arts in the local marketplace; when the man falls desperately ill, Kwan Shan is there to pay the man's doctor bills. Ivy is touched by his kindness and falls in love with him, but, of course, his heart belongs to Li Lihua. When Kwan Shan returns to his distant family home to take care of his sick mother, the lecherous local warlord forces Li Lihua to become his concubine. (As usual in Shaw Brothers films, the warlord is depicted as a bald-headed, mustachioed, uneducated, loud-mouthed brute, with a demonic cackle for a laugh.) The brave, self-sacrificing Ivy gets hired to be her maid (and to protect her). Upon Kwan Shan's return, Ivy's father and Kwan cook up a plan to sneak into the warlord's residential compound and free poor Li Lihua. Can Miss Li be saved? Will the warlord's torments cost Miss Li her sanity? For me, Ivy Ling Bo absolutely steals the show (again!). Miss Li's character basically is a helpless victim. Kwan Shan is kindhearted, but ineffective. It is upon the self-sacrificing shoulder's of Ivy that Miss Li's fate falls. The black and white cinematography looks spectacular, the performances of the large cast are uniformly excellent, and the film builds its tear-wrenching story to an exciting climax. If you like epic melodrama, with dastardly evildoers, damsels in distress, and purer-than-the-driven-snow good guys, then you definitely can't go wrong with "Between Tears and Smiles". |

| Yes, the movie is in black and white but it is a sharp and well-restored b/w photography. Li Lihua played two roles, displaying her versatility to the hilt. Her best actress award could not be disputed. Ivy LingBo did not fare too well compared to the same part played by actress Lin Cui of the Cathay version in color. |

| It was a fabulous and enduring love story in the 40s. Even though it was in black and white, Celestial had given it a magical facelift in sound and picture. Li Li Wah acted very well in 2 roles, i.e. a rich man's daughter and a poor songtress struggling to survive yet unable to continue her schooling till she met and fell in love with the kind-hearted, shy, handsome Kwan Shan. The story had a twist of fate in the middle Ivy, a multi-talented actress who portrayed as a poor man's daughter, excelled in her martial art tactics, saved LiLi Wah from vicious General Zeng Miu and made a happy ending for the enduring couple. Bravo Ivy, I love your magnificent dart! |

An old story made good by an excellent cast.
| The photography was clear and sharp despite being in black and white. This movie was littered with cameo appearances by Shaw stars, but the main cast did their job well. Veteran Li Lihua played two parts, the latter role was unfortunately not given much screen appearance but was sucessful in portraying a rich and frivolous girl as a striking contrast to the role of the poor and timid songstress. It is a joy to see Gao Bao Shu, Auyang ShaFei, Ivy Ling Bo, Guan Shang, Jiang Guan Chao, Wan Hao, and many others in this star-studded film. |
