After the curious strategy of trying to enter the Japanese market with English albums, Big Bang has returned to their native fighting ground where their quirky fashion, oversized sunglasses, and ridiculously catchy rhymes are best appreciated. The group's third mini album Stand Up largely follows the formula of last year's Always and Hot Issue, which means six hip-pop dance numbers that get stuck in your head very fast. The integration of rap and hip-hop into mainstream pop has long been a unique aspect of K-pop since the days of Seo Tai Ji and Boys, but Big Bang has really embraced the genre and taken it to a new commercial pop high. Title track Stand Up (Track 1) and the following Haru Haru (Track 2) and Heaven (Track 3) are in Big Bang's signature style of dramatic arrangements, strong beats, melodic raps, and catchy choruses. Haru Haru, in particular, is the album's money track from the haunting piano intro to G-Dragon and T.O.P's smooth rap overlays to the perfectly pop refrain, while Heaven goes a bit more velvety with relaxed rap and a balladic chorus. T.O.P wrote and co-composed A Good Man (Track 4), which fits in with the Big Bang style but sounds less bombastic than G-Dragon's compositions. The silky melody and free-flowing rhythm come with softer edges than the preceding tracks, particularly in the chorus and the guitar arrangement. The song has some rough transitions and unique arrangements, such that though the rap, vocal, and bridge sections are all individually strong, they don't always mesh together well. Lady (Track 5) and Oh My Friend (Track 6) both offer fun variations to the group's usual hip-hop sound. The lightest track of the album, Lady (Track 5) dabbles in old-school pop charm with flirtatious lyrics, a spry clap-along melody, and a bubbly chorus. The group goes punk pop in Oh My Friend (Track 6), an unexpected collaboration with punk band No Brain. Though the song doesn't that sound too memorable save for the hook, the combination of Big Bang and No Brain works surprising well, showing that the group can try new things without losing their original appeal. Stand Up also gets extra kudos for having sturdier packaging than last year's Always and Hot Issue, and coming with a fabulous build-your-own 3D paper model. Yes, you too can have your very own 3D papercraft model of a Big Bang member, though folding all the parts together will require some time and effort. I haven't yet transformed my Tae Yang paper parts into a 3D Tae Yang, but I'm sure it'll make a good desk decoration. |

Yes you may all think that I am just another Big Bang fan... and that is true... But I would really like to recommend this album... Not just because the music that Big Bang releases is actually written and produced by themselves and not like every other artist... Their music is inspiring and motivating... Their latest song OH MY FRIEND, was written to cheer on the athletes of Korea in the Olympics... also Haru haru is a very heart warming song with a big message and a good beat... I definitely recommend this album to all... *PS my friend who was just healing from a operation loves big bang because it motivates her to get well and live on BIG BANG FIGHTING!! |

No Limitations
|
Even though Big Bang originally debuted as a "hip-hop" group (in a hip-hop based company, YG), due to the success of both "Lies" and "Last Farewells" - we now know their capability of going beyond their "so-called" limitations. Big Bang is no longer bound to one genre, and through this album - once again, they have prove that they, as a group, has no limits. "Day By Day", to me, is a sadder/more meaningful version of "Lies". You can't help but be captivated by its soft piano melody throughout the song and their emotions in their raps/vocals. In this song, Big Bang matured so much in expressing their feelings. "Heaven" starts out with a dramatic melody, but once you hear the techno-feel, you can't help but smile to it - basically it is a very feel-good song. Not losing their roots, Big Bang offers "Stand Up" and "Lady" as their hip-hop genre tracks. "Oh My Friend" is a rock song, in which they collaborated with No Brain to celebrate the Olympics. This song probably caused the most controversy, because BB is moving a lot further away from their usual - BUT - surprisingly, their version of hip-hop/rock combination mash very well. "Good Man" (composed by Teddy of 1TYM and TOP) is a bossa-nova genre - surprising, isn't it? Don't get it wrong, this song is not the type that captures you immediately, give it a few more listens - then you might end up liking it a lot more. All-in-all, this mini-album offers so much to pass up on. Where can you get a mini-album that offers four or five different genres, with each tracks capable of giving itself justice? In my opinion, only Big Bang can go to that extent ---- and be successful with it. |
